Electric motors are being integrated with powertrains, gearing, and controls to make EVs more efficient and affordable. Electric motors are responsible for converting energy in the battery pack into mechanical motion. They are designed to be highly efficient and powerful enough to deliver enough torque for smooth acceleration. A motor can be either DC or AC. AC motors are more powerful and have more control options than DC motors. AC motors can be used in EVs however, must be combined with an inverter to achieve the DC power output. A DC shunt or separately excited motor is another type and can have a power rating up to 50 kW.

The electric motors used in EVs must be able to meet the strict requirements of the automobile's powertrain. These specifications are often referred to as its architecture. The architecture of an EV can vary depending on the model. Primary architectures typically have one electric motor and a conventional transmission system. Dual motor configurations, on the other hand, can incorporate two electric motors and have variable gearing.
