Fixed broadband deployment in the Middle East continues to expand

Most countries in the Middle East are working towards expanding fixed broadband infrastructure coverage - usually under the guidance of a National Broadband Network (NBN) strategy and often deployed by the incumbent.

The importance of high-speed broadband infrastructure, preferably based on fibre, has certainly been highlighted both in the Middle East and globally during the 2020 pandemic. The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to an increased demand for high-speed fixed broadband services from citizens based at home - and many of the operators in the region have observed a spike in broadband usage.

A transition from DSL to fibre-based networks is underway in many Middle Eastern markets and in some cases these high-speed networks are being connected to mobile base stations in order to underpin future upgrades and 5G deployments.

Overall, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar are considered leaders in terms of fibre deployment in the Middle East.

This BuddeComm report provides industry statistics, information on major players and key developments for the fixed broadband market in the Middle East.

Key developments:

  • Many countries in the Middle East are recognising that high-speed fixed broadband infrastructure will be required to underpin the evolution to 5G.
  • The well-established fibre-broadband network in the UAE is providing the operators with opportunities to grow service offerings such as triple-play bundling.
  • The UAE provided the fastest average broadband speeds in the Middle East in 2019.
  • Qatar's substantial fixed broadband network based on GigaNet fibre has held it in good stead during the COVID-19 pandemic.
