The infrared motion sensor Market was valued at US$609.418 million in 2020 and is projected to expand at a CAGR of 10.86% over the forecast period to reach US$1,254.290 million by 2027.

Infrared sensors are electrical devices that detect or send infrared radiation to sense objects in their surroundings. They are also capable of detecting the heat radiated by a moving object. These sensors detect and locate moving objects and are mostly used for target discrimination. Two types of Infrared sensors are found- active and passive.

Growing construction industry

It has recently been noted that new construction projects such as public buildings, private dwellings, office buildings, shopping complexes, and so on are installing systems such as escalators, automated doors, and taps, among other things, that use infrared motion sensors. In June 2021, for instance, Switchbot, a well-known smart device company announced the launch of its two products-SwitchBot Motion Sensor and SwitchBot Contact Sensor. These new products are integrated together into the home automation category. The motion sensor incorporates a light sensor to measure whether it is day or night and also it can detect the presence of any human. The sensor can also be connected to a smartphone, wherein the sensor will be able to send notifications to the associated smartphone, whenever it has detected a movement. If someone opens the door, window, drawer, or wherever it is installed, the contact sensor can alert the owner with a message. However, the two products can be used together, one for detecting human movement and the other for movement around the door, drawer, or window.

This has played a key role in the market's expansion and will continue to do so throughout the forecast period. However, the expensive cost of the motion sensor and its inability to identify things moving at extremely slow speeds are important impediments to the market's growth.

The growing demand from the automotive industry is fueling the growth of the motion sensor market.

The innovative technology trend of motion sensors in airbag deploy systems, sophisticated driver assistance systems, and vehicle safety is expected to provide profitable avenues in the motion sensor market. The motion sensor market is being stimulated by incredibly rapid demand for motion sensors in AR, VR, and MR for entertainment, health and wellness, industrial control, and smart homes, among other implementations such as 3D cinema headsets, virtual car retail spaces, construction project visualization, wearable technology, gaming systems, and robotic systems. For example, In May 2022, Sfera Labs launched the multi-function exo sense RP environmental sensor which includes a low-cost Raspberry Pi RP2040. The sensor includes capabilities such as light intensity, temperature, the volatile organic compound (VOC)-based air quality, humidity, an onboard microphone, and a passive infrared motion sensor. Furthermore, the widespread application of Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology has led to the shrinking of motion sensors, which bodes well for the industry. The growing use of MEMS-based motion sensors can be ascribed to the necessity to identify and anticipate natural disasters such as tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic activity.

Market Key Developments

  • In June 2022, Grestok made its Indian debut with a Smart Wi-Fi Motion Alarm. This passive infrared sensor alarm, operated by a smartphone app, may drive attackers away by blasting a loud 120dB siren and flashing lights while informing the phone of the incursion or even the slightest movement in the vicinity. When powered by 3xAA batteries or a 5V micro-USB with a charging cable, the detection range is 10m. Its ingenious structure enables it to be turned quickly or rotated in any direction. It is one of the market's most flexible smart motion sensors.
  • In October 2022, Smart Bee Design began a crowdfunding campaign for the Bee Motion S3, additional conscience motion-sensing development board based on the Espressif ESP32-S3. Bee Motion S3 is a feature-rich ESP32-S3 with an integrated PIR [Passive Infrared] motion sensor that simplifies the development of motion detection-based projects. This little board has a PIR sensor, a light sensor, an RGB LED, two LDOs [Low Drop-Out regulators], LiPo charging circuits, battery charge monitoring, and a STEMMA [QT] connection for conveniently connecting Adafruit or SparkFun sensor boards.
  • In June 2022, Tata Power, one of India's largest integrated power companies, announced the introduction of a new AI-Powered PIR (Passive Infrared) Motion Sensor under its Home Automation range 'Tata Power EZ Home' to provide intelligent energy solutions to help customers conserve electricity and minimize electricity bills, reinforcing its #DoGreen pledge. According to the BEE research report, the Tata Power EZ Home PIR Motion Sensor can save up to 40% on linked home appliance use. The Sensor, as well as other existing EZ Home solutions, are by recent government guidelines for requiring Energy Efficiency compliance with the requirements for residential structures.
