Bromelain is an enzyme extract derived mainly from the stems of pineapples, even if it exists in all parts of the fresh pineapple. The extract has a traditional history of folk medicine use. As a natural ingredient, it is used in cosmetics, as a topical medication, and as a meat tenderizer. The use of bromelain causes the body to produce substances that fight pain and swelling. Bromelain also consists of chemicals that impede the growth of tumor cells and slow blood clotting. Produced mainly in parts of the globe where pineapples are cultivated, such as Thailand or Malaysia. Bromelain is derived from the peel, stem, leaves or waste of the pineapple plant after removing the fruit. The starting material is then mixed together and pressed through a filter to get a supernatant liquid containing the soluble bromelain enzyme. Further processing involves purification and concentration of the enzyme.
