DNA chips, biochips, or DNA microarrays consist of a microscope slide made of materials such as glass, silicon chips, and nylon membrane, which is printed with thousands of minute spots. These spots contain a known DNA sequence or gene in an ordered sequence. DNA microarrays use the nucleic acid hybridization principle, and types of DNA microarrays include cDNA microarrays, oligo DNA microarrays, BAC microarrays, and SNP microarrays. Applications of DNA chips include the study of transcriptomes and proteomes, the diagnosis of diseases, the identification of microbes, and others. A DNA microarray or chip is a semiconductor surface on which sequences of many varied genes are bonded to probes. DNA microarrays are used to genotype different areas of a genome or to assess the expression levels of several genes at once. The method is applicable to areas such as clinical diagnostics, agriculture, environmental management, and other fields.
