目錄

The global bio-ceramics market expected to record a CAGR of 6.1% during the forecast period from 2015 to 2020 with its market demand which was USD 12.5 billion in 2015 and is expected to reach USD 16.8 billion by 2020. Bio-ceramics are ceramic materials that are biocompatible and these owing to their properties such as biocompatible, wear resistant, light weight, are used in various applications and mostly for repair and replacement of diseased and damaged parts of the musculoskeletal system. Their diverse properties make bio-ceramics be used in a variety of applications in surgical implants, dental and bone implants, joint replacements, bone graft substitutes, dental implants, orthopaedic load-bearing coatings, etc.

Market Dynamics of the Global Bio-Ceramics Market:

Drivers:

  • Growing demand for medical services and devices
  • Demand for biocompatible materials
  • Increased usage in dental care
  • Usage in replacement of hard tissues of the body
  • Growing need to maintain healthy lifestyle
  • Increasing need for implants continues to increase the demand for implantable bio-ceramics and composites
  • Rising urban populations and increasing consumer incomes are other market drivers.

Restraints:

  • Bio-ceramics are not resilient
  • Bio-ceramics are not easy to fabricate.

Bio-ceramics market has been divided according to the material types into aluminium oxide, zirconia, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, carbon, and glass; where alumina dominates the global market accounting for over 62% in 2015. Alumina used extensively in implants for dental and joint applications. Zirconia is also key ceramic materials for bone implants, which is primarily used due to its chemical inertness and mechanical strength. The bio-ceramics market has also been divided according to the product types such as bioinert, bioactive and bio-resorbable. Bioinert ceramics provides corrosion and wear-resistance and is typically used as structural-support implant such as bone plates, bone screw, femoral heads. Bioactive ceramics are glass ceramics, dense non porous glasses. Bio-resorbable ceramics are calcium phosphate, calcium sulphate, hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, ferric-calcium-phosphorous oxides. The bio-ceramics market has also been divided based on end user industry into orthopaedic, bone grafting, tissue engineering, dental care, drug delivery systems, cardiovascular and few others.

The market has also been geographically segmented into Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe, and South America. Europe is the largest and the fastest growing market for bio-ceramics with a major share of the total market. Positive outlook towards the orthopaedic sector in Germany is expected to drive market growth. Also, Asia-Pacifics bio-ceramics market in the orthopaedic sector is also growing which is due to the rapidly expanding elderly population, where China market to witness strong growth in bio-ceramics market in this region as it is driven by the fact that people are gaining access to advanced medical treatment as healthcare reform reaches Chinas rural regions. North Americas bio-ceramics market also expected to increase due to research in bio-ceramics, increase in cancer incidences, growing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in the U.S and increasing funding and R&D activities in Canada.

There is an increasing demand of bio-ceramics due to its various uses in biomedical fields, advancements in medical technology and increasing demand for medical devices, dental crowns, bridges, and bristles leading to the growth of the bio-ceramics market. Also, due to the development of biomimetic composites and developing methods to produce customized nanoceramics, there is a constant increase in the demand for bio-ceramics which may result in higher growth rates leading to an increase in the bio-ceramics manufacturers.
