Gel electrophoresis devices are used for the separation of nucleic acids and proteins based on their charge and size. These devices are mainly used in forensic investigation, molecular biology, genetics, and microbiological labs. Electrophoresis is used for analyzing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products. It is a laboratory technique used to separate DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), RNA (Ribonucleic acid), and protein molecules by passing an electric current from end to end. The movement of charged molecules is called migration. Molecules migrate towards the opposite charge. A molecule with a negative charge will therefore be pulled towards the positive end. Electrophoresis has a wide application in separating and analyzing biomolecules such as proteins, plasmids, RNA, DNA, and nucleic acids. Electrophoresis of positively charged particles (cations) is sometimes called cataphoresis, while electrophoresis of negatively charged particles (anions) is sometimes called anaphoresis. Smaller molecules migrate through the gel more quickly and therefore travel further than larger fragments that migrate more slowly and therefore will travel a shorter distance. As a result the molecules are separated by size.
