Heat stress is recognized as a potential problem in many industries. Existing control measures rely heavily on the use of thermal indices to assess the risk imposed, although it is recognized that these indices are conservative and often restrict work unnecessarily and that the range of thermal environments over which they have been validated is limited, frequently not extending to the impact of wearing protective clothing and other forms of personal protective equipment (PPE). Even where they provide reliable estimates and risk reduction measures are introduced, good working practice advocates that it should not be assumed that such measures are effective. Measurement of physiological parameters, particularly body temperature, is often seen therefore either as an adjunct to the use of such indices or as an alternative. The rectal temperature has widely been regarded as the 'gold standard' for indicating core body temperature. However, changing social attitudes mean that this is now rarely regarded as socially acceptable for industrial monitoring.

In recent years, intragastric (IG) temperature (measured using a temperature-sensitive radio-pill) has increasingly replaced the use of rectal temperature as a measure of core body temperature. Evidence from scientific literature is presented to support this view. However, practical and cost issues mean that it is not a viable method for routine monitoring. Technological advances mean that new measures, such as the use of infrared (IR) sensors to measure tympanic temperature, theoretically provide a solution for industrial monitoring. Opinions vary as to the reliability of this approach, especially outside the clinical environment. Evidence from the scientific literature is mixed, although there is sufficient positive evidence to suggest that it could provide an adequate monitoring measurement. There are several types of body temperature scanner that are available in the market. Based on applications, the market is further bifurcated into the oral cavity, rectum and others. The measurement of core body temperature may seem simple, but several issues affect the accuracy of the reading. These include the measurement site, the reliability of the instrument and user technique. Non-invasive sites such as the rectum, oral cavity, axilla, temporal artery (forehead) and external auditory canal are accessible and are believed to provide the best estimation of the core temperature. The temperature measured between these sites can vary greatly, so the same site ought to be used consistently and recorded on the chart with the reading. Based on the end-user, the market is segmented into hospitals, clinics/diagnostics center, home/office setting and other. In 2019, hospitals dominated the global body temperature scanner market, generating revenue of US$ 244.6 million. Temperature management remains a significant component of hospital care for all neonatal and pediatric patients. Body temperatures outside normal ranges may be indicative of underlying disease processes or clinical deterioration and should be identified promptly. On a regional level the report segments the market into North America (the U.S and Canada), Europe (Germany, France, Spain, Italy, and United Kingdom), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India and Australia) and Rest of World has been conducted.
