Lithium carbonate price has surged by more than 70% over the past two years, and Cobalt price has jumped up by 130% since 2016. Furthermore, Nickel prices have also been rising for the eighth consecutive weeks, marking a two-year high.

With the growth of the electric vehicle market, the demand for lithium secondary batteries has shown a steady increase. Among various oxides, lithium has been used as a cathode material for secondary batteries with other metals such, including Copper and aluminum. Nickel, cobalt, manganese, and aluminum are primarily used for battery cathode with different ratios. Other raw materials for secondary batteries include aluminum foil for cathode plate, copper foil for anode plate, and can or pouch depending on the types of batteries.

One unit of Tesla model S consumes 7.7 Kg of lithium, 53.5 Kg of nickel, 10 Kg of cobalt and 26.6 Kg of copper. An appropriate supply of these raw materials is essential to support the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Unfortunately, the supply of some of the raw materials is expected to be unable to meet the increasing demand. In a worst-case scenario, the production of lithium secondary batteries and electric vehicles may be limited by the shortage of raw material supply. For this reason, not only battery makers but electric vehicle industry are paying close attention to the price and supply-demand balance of raw materials. Proper measures ensuring a stable supply of raw materials should be prepared in advance.

In this report, the contents of primary materials in lithium secondary batteries are examined. In addition, availability of raw materials, recyclability, relevance to lithium batteries, regional distribution of vendors and producers are analyzed in detail.
