The first electric vehicle traces back to a three-wheeled automobile demonstrated by French inventor Gustave Trouve in 1881 at the International Exhibition of Electricity in Paris and electric vehicles once outsold internal combustion engine automobiles.

The Renaissance for electric vehicles has recently been brought by the release of Toyota? hybrid car Prius. Since then, automakers have strived to unveil new BEV and PHEV models such Nissan LEAF, Chevrolet Volt, Tesla Model S.

SNE Research, watching the development of monthly EV sales with the keenest interest, expects the EV market to show explosive growth after 2015 with three turning points - overcoming limited driving range and high battery prices and entry of new market players.

SNE Research every month has complied EV sales data worldwide to keep current with trends. We have gathered and compiled country-specific sales data for each EV model (28 countries) to help identify what cars are the most popular in each country and also provide region- and model-specific sales data.

In 2014, about two million electric cars were sold: 1,686,327 HEVs, 211,586 BEVs and 129,290 PHEVs. In terms of actual number of cars sold, HEVs account for 83% but BEVs and PHEVs more and more increase their shares.

This report provides data of battery shipments for EVs, based on analyses on the specification, capacity and supplier of rechargeable batteries used in each EV model. It also analyzes demand for rechargeable batteries by EV model, battery type, shape (cylindrical/prismatic/pouch) and supplier.

From a supplier perspective, Panasonic, Tesla's battery-cell supplier, accounts for the largest market share, followed by AESC, which supplies rechargeable batteries for the best-selling electric vehicle Nissan Leaf. PEVE, which is a JV between Toyota and Panasonic, and supplies nickel-hydride batteries for Toyota hybrid cars, ranks 3rd but its supply of li-ion batteries remains small.

Capacity- and model-specific data revealed that HEVs hold a dominant position in sales volume but have a relatively small share in terms of capacity. Based on capacity per vehicle, BEVs account for the largest share of the entire demand.

As for the correlation between the battery shape (cylindrical/prismatic/pouch) and EV model, prismatic batteries are preferred in HEVs; prismatic and pouch types share evenly in PHEVs; and all the types are evenly distributed in BEVs.

The data provided are limited to passenger EVs, excluding electric buses, e-bikes, electric trucks and commercial equipment.

The battery capacity provided may differ from the actual shipments by manufacturers in that it is based on those used in EVs actually sold and does not include any stocks of batteries mounted in electric cars or as parts and losses during car manufacturing process.
