According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Biogas Plant Market is accounted for $3.51 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $7.43 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 11.3% during the forecast period. The biogas plant has an important task to play in the generation of sustainable society and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels. Obtainability of extensive feedstock is outlining the future projection for the production of biogas. Worldwide, biogas has been recognized as one of the most upfront means for green energy production.
Market Dynamics:
Driver:
Growing Implementation of Renewables
The rising adoption of renewable energy sources and rising list of stringent regulations regarding greenhouse gases will foster market growth. Moreover, increasing utilization of it in the field of electricity generation will fuel the market towards a larger footprint. It can also be procured from commercial food waste, domestic municipal and industrial sewage, agricultural waste, and livestock manure, which will augment the growth rate. The growing adoption of renewable energy sources in the overall power mix of various countries is one of the prime factors which will drive construction activities worldwide. Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and meeting increased energy demands simultaneously have been the primary targets of governing bodies in countries all around the globe. The installation of renewable energy sources is set to grow tremendously over the coming decade, which, in turn, will lead to the expansion of the market.
Restraint:
High Cost
The market is restrained by the requirement of high capital expenditure for plant installation and commissioning. The capital required for establishing construction costs is very high. The construction cost of a plant includes equipment, engineering, land, materials, and labor. Several countries in the world provide financial assistance for the construction of these plants. In addition, the supply chain which includes collection, sorting, processing, and distribution of feedstock, operation & maintenance of plants, and sale & distribution of the gas produced, is also costly and time-consuming.
Opportunity:
Increasing Per Capita Income coupled With Population Growth
Increasing financial support comprising of feed-in tariffs & subsidy schemes primarily for electricity generation from biogas enhances the industry outlook. Population growth and people's migration from rural to urban areas have caused a spike in energy demand and have also increased waste generation. Most of the world's total population is living in urban areas. This undoubtedly requires ramping up of waste treatment capacities, thus creating opportunities for market growth. Biogas plants can produce biogas from a wide range of organic matter, such as commercial and domestic food waste, agricultural material, municipal and industrial sewage, and livestock manures. These capabilities, coupled with rising waste generation, are expected to create ample opportunity.
Threat:
Time Consuming
The supply chain comprises collection, sorting, processing, and distribution of feedstock, operation & maintenance of plants, and sale & distribution of the gas produced, which is time-consuming and act as one of the major threat for the market growth.
Wet Anaerobic Digestion segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period
The wet anaerobic digester segment held the largest share of the global market, as most of the feedstock process in the digester is in liquid form. This system uses organic material with a consistency of 10-20% dry matter or less. The main advantage of this digester system is that it allows for optimal mixing and thus results in high production. Also, the investment and operating costs are lower.
The Small-Scale Digesters segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period
Small-scale digesters are biogas plants that produce methane gas from the decomposition of organic material. These plants can be found in homes, schools, and farms across many countries including India, China, and Indonesia. This is a type of anaerobic digestion system which does not require mechanical ventilation but instead relies on naturally occurring bacteria to break down compounds into more manageable substances such as carbon dioxide and water.
Region with highest share:
The Asia Pacific is projected to hold the highest market share, due to the rates of investments rising greatly in this province for waste management processes. These factors, coupled with increasing pressure created by energy imports have compelled various APAC countries to focus on alternatives to fossil fuels, including ramping up the generation of biogas. China, India, Japan, and Australia have so far been the leading nations in terms of generation of it in the Asia Pacific market. Like the developed economies, the market in APAC has also been led by agricultural waste and the F&B processing residue, and sewage sludge as core feedstock.
Region with highest CAGR:
Europe is projected to have the highest CAGR, owing to increased investment in bio related energy. Germany is the biggest producer in Europe, hosting more than 9,500 plants, more than half the total number of installations currently in operation across the European Union (EU). The European growth can be accredited to more government initiatives taken up for sustainable management practices that focus on decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as inefficient energy consumption trends prevailing in Europe region, are driving this demand trend towards renewable sources such as biomass-based cogeneration plants (biomass).
Key players in the market:
Some of the key players profiled in the Biogas Plant Market include Agrinz Technologies GmbH, Air Liquide, Ameresco Inc, Beijing Sanyi Green Energy Development Co Ltd, Biofrigas Sweden AB, Biofuel USA Corporation, CH4 Biogas, EnviTec Biogas AG, IES BIOGAS, Lusakert Biogas Plant, PlanET Biogas Global GmbH, Quadrogen, Scandinavian Biogas, SP Renewable Energy Sources Pvt Ltd, Swedish Biogas International, Wartsila.
Key developments:
In December 2020: Scandinavian Biogas acquired Ekdalen Biotransporter. This acquisition helps achieve a greater integration of the supply chain and increase capacity for offering comprehensive transport solutions towards the biogas industry.
In June 2020: EnviTec Biogas AG announced that debuted in the Estonian gas market with a double order for its EnviThan gas upgrading plants. Even though the company has already built seven biogas plants in Latvia, gas upgrading facilities are new technologies for the Baltic nations, giving EnviTec a head-start in this region.
In August 2020: EnviTec Biogas announced that it received an order to construct 1MW of plant in Greece. The plant is located in the Thessaloniki regional unit and will use silage, food waste, and wet manure as feedstock.
In February 2017: EnviTec Biogas signed a co-operation agreement with PT Herfinta Farm & Plantation (Indonesia) and Calfield SDN BHD (Malaysia) for the construction of a biogas plant in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The plant is projected to contribute a total of 4 MW to the green energy transition in Indonesia.
