Approximately 70 million American homes burn natural gas, oil, or propane onsite to heat interior space and water. This generates 560 million tons of CO each year-a tenth of total US emissions, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. This represents just under half of all residential end-use energy consumption nationally.

Electrification technologies are rapidly becoming more cost-effective and more reliable than fossil fuel systems in a variety of planning scenarios and climates. Although mixed systems predominate, the electrification of all residential energy end uses is desirable for many consumers and is expected to increase substantially on a 10-year timeline. Regulatory developments also stress decarbonization and therefore favor full electrification as a low emissions building approach. Navigant Research, a Guidehouse company, defines the fully electrified home (FEH) as one where space heating, water heating, and cooking are electrified through the use of air source heat pumps (ASHPs), heat pump water heaters (HPWHs), and induction cooking technologies. Insulation and energy management systems (EMSs) are considered part of FEHs.

This Navigant Research report examines the global market for FEHs in five major regions, presenting a 10-year forecast and market sizing from 2020-2029. The report provides forecasts for the number of FEHs in four key segments, including new construction, renovations, single-family, and multifamily. This report includes revenue forecasts for electrification-enabling technologies and looks at emerging drivers, barriers, market trends, and policy and technology issues related to this market.

Key Questions Addressed:

  • What is a fully electrified home?
  • What are the types of fully electrified home technologies?
  • What are the market drivers and barriers and emerging trends for fully electrified homes and their enabling technologies?
