The movement of people and goods by vehicle, ship, and airplane continues to contribute to rising congestion and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions around the world. Limited options for intercity travel are restricting economic growth and regional mobility. High speed ground transport (HSGT) technologies such as high speed rail (HSR), magnetic levitation (maglev) trains, and hyperloops can link cities into economic megaregions while simultaneously helping to transform the transportation system to become more sustainable.

The proliferation of HSR has provided an economic boost and reduced short-haul air traffic across much of Europe and several countries in Asia Pacific, such as Japan and China. Maglev trains and hyperloops could extend these trends much further. However, maglev costs will need to be significantly reduced, and hyperloops will have to overcome a myriad of technological, safety, regulatory, and business model challenges to become a viable mass transport technology.
