To combat climate change, carbon emissions globally must be cut 25% by 2030. To achieve this goal, a strong emphasis on decarbonization across all energy needs is required. Sector-coupling, an avenue in which green hydrogen is an integral fuel for facilitating a transition to net zero, is gaining momentum. Given its versatility, hydrogen has applications in industrial decarbonization, fueling the transportation sector, district heating and agriculture, refineries, and the electric power sector. Hence, it is anticipated that global hydrogen demand will increase two-fold by 2030 and approximately five-fold by 2050 in comparison with its demand for 2020 (approximately 90 million tons of hydrogen).

To satisfy this forecast increase in hydrogen demand, scaling up infrastructure across generation, transmission, distribution, and storage is imperative. Owing to inherent variability along the hydrogen supply-demand chain, hydrogen storage is critical to the development of the hydrogen economy. Hydrogen can be stored in three different states (gas, liquid, and solid) governed by land availability, the presence of excess renewable energy, and the maturity of storage technology and the associated costs.
