Driven by increasing environmental concerns, the EV fleet is poised to grow significantly from 2020-2030. Banning or abandoning the internal combustion engine (ICE) in light duty vehicle markets is gathering momentum among governments, corporations, and automakers. The alignment is likely to pull forward regional plug-in EV (PEV) adoption by 5 to 10 years. As such, Guidehouse Insights projects the global fleet of PEVs will be more than 185 million by 2030.

The 2030 fleet is expected to consist of many PEVs with no dedicated parking locations, light duty PEVs capable of charging at up to 500 kW and heavy commercial EVs capable of charging at more than 1 MW, many PEVs that are battery swapping capable, many PEVs that are vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capable, and some that use wireless charging systems. The growing market is encouraging for established charging infrastructure providers, of which most are focused on AC- and DC-based charging systems. But the market is still immature and many innovations and efficiencies in PEV designs and infrastructure systems are likely to disrupt the market before 2030. As such, there are both risks and plenty of opportunities for new entrants.
