The global sawn wood market is anticipated to register a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period. Sawn wood production grew by 2% around the world in 2018 and the output of both sawn wood and panels reached a record high. Global production and trade in wood pulp also grew by 2% to reach new levels in 2018 - 188 million tonnes and 66 million tonnes respectively. An increase in volumes is mainly driven by the rapid development of the Chinese children's furniture sector, where spruce sawn wood is widely used. China and the USA are the two main consumers of sawn wood in 2018. Over the past few years, the consumption of sawn wood in China grew by 34%, and the USA's consumption grew by 11%. The other three main consumers of sawn wood globally are Germany, Canada, and Japan.

Rising Sawn Wood Production

For the past few years, global sawn wood production is increasing constantly. From 2014-2018, global production increased by 13.1%. In 2018, global production was 492.5 million m3. China, the USA, Canada, Russian, Germany, and Sweden are the top producers globally. In 2018, the production of sawn wood in the aforementioned countries was 90.3 million m3, 82.1 million m3, 46.8 million m3, 42.7 million m3, 23.7 million m3, 18.3 million m3 respectively. As well as being the largest producers, China and the USA are also the two main consumers of sawn wood.

Asia-Pacific is the Largest Importer of Sawn Wood

In 2018, China imported 38 million m³ of sawn wood. By value the total sawn wood imports by Asia was valued at USD 18.5 billion, Eastern Asia imported sawn wood worth USD 13.62 billion, and Western Asia imported 1.83 billion worth products in 2018. By volume, Asia imported 65.5 million m3 of sawn wood, Central Asia imported 4.50 million m3, Eastern Asia imported 47.4 m3 products.
