Market Overview

The market for surgical wounds is majorly driven by the rising number of surgeries across the globe. The innovations in technology and the rising preference of the general population for minimally invasive surgeries are contributing to the growing volume of surgical procedures across the globe.

According to the European Union Statistics, during the year 2016-2017, in Germany, hip replacement surgery was performed for 304 times per 100,000 individuals. In Austria and Finland, it was around 273 and 265 per 100,000, respectively. As per the OECD stats, in Canada, the number of surgeries performed were 378,448 during the year 2013 and it has been increased to 396,218 in the year 2017. In France, surgeries performed in the year 2014 were 773,308 and it raised to 863,837 by the year 2017. Similarly, Other European countries such as Spain, Italy, Netherlands, etc. have also witnessed a rise in the number of surgeries performed.

National Quality Forum has stated in its report that the number of surgical procedures in the United States is continuously increasing annually and since the last decade, the rate of surgeries performed in the ambulatory surgery centers has increased by 300 percent. As per the factsheet provided by the Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), during the year 2014, around 14.2 million operative procedures were performed in the United States and around 157,500 surgical site infections (SSIs) were seen among these surgeries.

This rising number of surgeries is directly contributing to the growth of the market studied as wounds due to the surgery are also increasing. In addition, companies such as Coloplast and Smith and Nephew are into the market providing widely accepted products to deal with the surgical wounds which add strength to the market.

Scope of the Report

Surgical Dressing is a sterile pad or compresses which is applied to the wound after surgery to accelerate the wound healing and avoid further harm to the organ. The market is segmented by product, application, end-user, and geography.

Key Market Trends

Foam Dressing to Witness Healthy CAGR Over the Forecast Period

Foam dressing is an extremely absorbent dressing used for wound care. Foam dressings need less changing of dressings when compared to other types of dressings. Foam dressing works for heavily exuding wounds, like weeping ulcers, deep cavity wounds, wounds caused after debridement, etc.

These are generally made from semi-permeable polyurethane. They allow water vapor to enter but keep out contaminants and bacteria. In some cases, the outer layer of these dressings may be waterproof, depending upon the need. A variety of wound types, with at least a moderate amount of exudate, including abrasions, lacerations, pressure ulcers, incisions, infected wounds, and draining periosteal wounds, are expected to benefit from foam dressings. Foam dressings are usually prescribed for their biggest advantage: providing a moist and warm environment, which is ideal for healing. These dressings are majorly used for full or partial-thickness wounds, that have moderate or more drainage.

Furthermore, these dressings serve as a cushion to protect the affected area and also act as a barrier against bacteria during compression therapy. The ability of these dressings to be used as primary dressings or secondary dressings during accidents or other serious cases is expected to increase its adoption.

The United States to Dominate the Market

Major factors that are driving the market for surgical dressing in the United States are rapidly growing aging population, a high number of diabetic population, and the developed healthcare system which adapts to the novel innovations. The statistics show that around 30.3 million people in the United States were suffering from Diabetes in the year 2017 and subsequently, the number is increasing. The International Diabetes Federation has stated that in the whole North America region, the number of people suffering from Diabetes by the year 2045 would reach up to 62 million.

Added to that, companies such as Cardinal Health, Coloplast A/S, Integra Lifesciences, etc. are having a large portfolio of surgical dressing and these companies hold a healthy share in the United States. Hence, owing to the above-mentioned factors, the market studied is expected to be dominated by the United States.

Competitive Landscape

The market players are committed to developing innovative healing solutions for customers and patients across the care continuum, generating proven clinical outcomes. The companies are also showing continuous growth and are developing new and differentiated products and services, which address the evolving healthcare needs among patients, providers, and consumers.
