The aircraft arresting system market is estimated to register a CAGR of over 5% during the forecast period, 2020-2025.

  • For the safe landing of the aircraft on the runway of land-based and sea-based platforms is one of the major demand generating factor for the aircraft arresting systems.
  • The modernization of the commercial airports with the new engineered materials arresting systems (EMAS) to enhance the safety of the runway is another factor boosting the growth of the market during the forecast period.
  • Investments by the governments and companies for the development of new arresting gears on aircraft carriers are expected to create new market opportunities for the prominent players during the forecast period.

Key Market Trends

The Land-based Segment to Experience the Highest Growth During the Forecast Period

The land-based segment of the market is expected to register the highest CAGR during the forecast period. This growth is mainly due to the use of new engineered materials arresting systems (EMAS) in the land-based platforms, like airports and military bases, to enhance the safety of the runway by the use of a series of crushable blocks to slow the speed of an aircraft during an emergency overrun. DeKalb Peachtree Airport and Yeager Airport are two airports in the United States that have recently installed the EMAS technology in the airports. Construction of new airports is further expected to boost the growth of the market during the forecast period.

The Asia-Pacific Region to Experience the Highest Growth During the Forecast Period

As of December 2018, North America holds a major share in the aircraft arresting system market. The United States has plans to replace their outdated aircraft arresting systems in its aircraft carriers with new ones in the next few years. In 2017, the USAF (the United States Air Force) phased out their BAK-14 hook cable support system and has replaced it with the new BAK-14M cable support system for aircraft arresting. Moreover, according to the USAF, the retract feature of the BAK-14M allows the hook cable to remain connected to the arresting system and can also be quickly lowered below the runway surface whenever civil flight operations take place. However, the Asia-Pacific region is anticipated to have the highest growth during the forecast period. The growth is majorly due to the increasing aircraft carrier construction and procurement plans, as well as due to the increasing investments in construction and modernization of the airports in China, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia, among others. China is currently building its first indigenous aircraft carrier, which was a modified version of the Liaoning and is expected to enter into service by end of 2019. Similarly, Japan has announced its plans to convert its Izumo-class helicopter destroyers into aircraft carriers. The presence of territorial disputes in the East China Sea and the South China Sea has driven regional navies to upgrade their aircraft carrier capabilities, which in turn, is expected to generate the demand for aircraft arresting systems on these carriers.

Competitive Landscape

The prominent players in the aircraft arresting system market are General Atomics, Safran SA, QinetiQ Group plc, and Sojitz Aerospace Corporation. MacTaggart Scott, a Scottish-based company is one of the prominent players in the market that has provided arrester gear to Naval Aircraft Carriers of the United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Canada, India, Australia, Argentina, and Brazilian Navies. By increasing the geographical presence, the companies are anticipated to capture additional market opportunities. Additionally, the development of new aircraft arresting systems that can reduce the number of operators, maintenance hours, by improving the reliability and effectiveness are expected to capture the attention of the military and commercial operators.
