Rising Cost of ADAS Features and Growing Number of Technical Errors in ADAS Is Hampering the Market

The ADAS depend on sensors and semiconductors for their functioning; sensors detect the information and send it to an Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU processes the data and runs it in an algorithm, and the output is finally directed to the driver. The problem with these sensors is there limited functionality, which is reducing its reliability. For instance, the cameras and sensors find it difficult in detecting the objects or people in low visibility conditions. The ADAS features like the adaptive cruise control and autopilot remain unreliable at present because of some accidents reported in case of cars using these features.

Google's autonomous car that uses the most advanced ADAS technology resulted in a crash colliding a bus, which was because of a misassumption by the car's autonomous system. Another incident involved the crash of a Tesla car cruising on autopilot, which resulted in the death of the driver. In this case, the autopilot feature reportedly failed to differentiate the white-colored trailer that came across perpendicularly to the vehicle's path from the bright daylight, resulting in the vehicle colliding with the bottom part of the container.
