Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), commonly known as drones, are equipped with cameras and sensors, such as gas detectors, infrared or laser pulses. They are proving to be beneficial in the energy sector. The oil & gas industry, both upstream and downstream, is expected to benefit significantly from the advantages that drones can provide. Drones can reach otherwise unreachable places and collect the required data faster than the manual techniques.

December 2017: India's biggest gas transporter, GAIL India Ltd (GAIL), has hired one drone on a pilot basis, for the aerial surveillance of HBJ pipeline in the Chambal Ravines in Madhya Pradesh.
