GROWING PUBLIC AWARENESS TOWARD ROAD SAFETY

The quest for vehicle safety is one of the vital factors in the development of advanced automobile safety systems. Automotive collision warning systems potentially signify the next significant leap in vehicle safety technology. As consumers are gaining awareness about the advanced safety features and technologies, they are indicating interest in improving the safety systems of their vehicles.

According to the European Commission for the Automotive Industry, ~50% of the accidents occur at night. A majority of the road accidents that happen at night occur due to poor visibility; the ability to judge distance is reduced at night. About 90% of the drivers' decisions are made based on what they see. However, at night, limited light causes many issues of visibility, in turn increasing the number of accidents. Thousands of pedestrians are hit by cars every year, and the IIHS estimates that 1.5 million deer-vehicle collisions occur, for the same amount of time.

The risks associated with traffic are higher at night, as compared to the day. The main aim of night vision systems (NVSs) is to improve the driver's range of vision and provide protection to the driver, as well as pedestrians.

With the growing risk of accidents at nights, due to poor visibility and increased traffic, both consumers and governments, across the world, are becoming more concerned about the safety of passengers and pedestrians. As a result, automobile manufacturers are equipping their vehicles with driver assistance systems, such as NVSs, to help the drivers in effective driving. Automobile manufacturers are continually working on installing vehicles with either active NVSs or passive NVSs.

Though these systems are currently limited to luxury vehicles, the government is enacting regulations that are expected to ensure that NVSs are available in low-cost vehicles as well, in the coming years.

FAR INFRARED - SEGMENT DOMINATING THE MARKET

The Far Infrared (FIR/ far IR) segment was valued at USD 0.974 billion in 2017 and is expected to project a CAGR of 18.81% over the forecast period.

Night vision sensor systems are becoming more common in vehicles. Different methods using infrared sensors have been suggested in the literature, in order to detect vehicles in far infrared (FIR) images. However, these systems still have low vehicle detection rates, and their performance could be enhanced. Images from cameras with infrared are expected to improve the perception of the driver, under low-light conditions.This image is displayed on the HUD or monitors of the rear-view mirror. The main drawback of this system is that it cannot display the images at the right time, to avoid distracting the driver from road traffic

It uses CMOS sensors, producing the infrared signal, of wavelength 800 nm for near IR, and 7-14 micrometer for far IR. Currently, a huge number of road accidents occur during times of low visibility, such as at night time. However, most existing automobile algorithms and detection systems are more focused on daylight vehicle detection, with visible spectrum cameras. Studies are going on regarding night-time vehicle detection, along with vehicle lamp detection, but these detections are generally affected by different factors, like rain, low illumination, and camera exposure time.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

The Market is highly consolidated by major players like Denso, Autoliv, Magna, and Hella. Denso Corporation has dominated the market capturing a share of 39% in 2017.

The Electronics division of Autoliv in 2017 grew by 5% compared to its previous year to USD 2.3 billion. The sales growth was due to an organic increase in sales of active safety division of which night vision camera has a significant share.
