In 2016, the gunshot detection system market was valued at USD XX million and is expected to register a CAGR of 27.36%, during 2017-2022 (the forecast period).
The United States was the first country to use the gunshot detection systems for homeland security. These gunshot detection systems are usually installed at a height of more than 30 feet above the ground-level and at specific locations. The prime reason for these detection systems to be installed is the increasing in shootings incidents at educational institutions.
The gunshot detection system market is segmented into defense and homeland, where homeland segment dominated the market in 2016 and is expected to continue its dominance during 2017-2022 (the forecast period).
The gunshot detection system market is estimated to grow, due to a high number of firearm-related deaths in North America, especially, in the United States, during 2017-2022 (the forecast period). In the United States the death rate is 25 times greater than other countries. Therefore, the US government is planning to install indoor gunshot detection systems at universities, corporate office locations, and commercial facilities, among others, in the next five years.
The growth of gunshot detection system market is driven by factors, such as, increased rate of deaths by guns in North America, and the need for increased security in smart cities. However, as the installation cost and maintenance of gunshot detection systems are high, the growth of the gunshot detection system market can be negatively affected. Rise in deaths or homicide incidents due to guns is a major concern for the demand for gunshot detection system.
Shot spotter is trying to help reduce the societal costs of gun violence, and create safer communities. The company has produced three products, namely, ShotSpotter Flex for urban areas, SST Secure Campus, and ShotSpotter SiteSecure for universities, offices, and transportation centers. ShotSpotter's systems use cloud-based software and sensors to pinpoint gunshots and notify authorities. For outdoor gunfire, sensors capture the data, record an audio file, and sends it to the company's incident-review center. Acoustic experts review the data and try to add extra information, such as, whether there were multiple shooters or high-capacity weapon. On an average, an alert containing location information is sent to emergency dispatch and authorities within 45 seconds. Moreover, for Indoors, the products automatically send an alert to security within 10 seconds.
ShotSpotter generated a revenue of USD 15.5 million in 2016.
