The market for commercial aircraft landing gears is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.56% during the forecast period. As the sale of landing gears is directly related to the sale of aircraft, the more aircraft in market, higher is the demand for landing gear.
As of 2015, 17,354 passenger aircraft and 1,633 cargo aircraft are in service. This number is expected to grow to 29,000 by the end of 2020. The aviation market is expected to add an average of 2,200 new aircraft, annually, during the forecast period.
Leading commercial aircraft OEMs - Airbus and Boeing, have combined backlog orders of 12,626 aircraft that include both passenger and freight aircraft. 54% of these backlog orders belong to Airbus, of which about 140 orders are for A380.
Geographically, the European and North American regions are expected to have a growth in demand for aircraft landing gears, followed by the country-wise market in Brazil, China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and India. The market in North America, Europe, and Brazil are driven by the aircraft OEMs situated in the regions. North America houses Boeing and the MNC Bombardier, and Boeing is known to be one of the largest suppliers of commercial aircraft and Bombardier being one of the third largest aircraft OEM. Bombardier's main market is of business jets and small commercial aircraft. Airbus Company, situated in Europe, is also vying for the number one spot for commercial aircraft OEM. Brazil's Embraer has been in the league for the long range commercial small aircraft OEM, fighting for third spot in the world. Under the intense competition between aircraft OEM, the demand for landing gear at OEM is viably fast growing and profitable. In terms of aftersales market, the landing gears market is expected see a higher demand for nose gear than undercarriage gear, attributing to the higher stress on the nose gear of aircraft during landing. The demand for tires of undercarriage wheels would also be relatively high for passenger and cargo aircraft aftersales market.
On an average, a normal sized passenger commercial aircraft uses three landing gears with six wheels, but the larger aircraft such as widebody and very large body, may have more than two undercarriage or main landing gear, with more than four pairs of wheels. For instance, the Airbus A380 uses four sets of main landing gears and has 18 wheels, excluding the nose gear. The market is feasible in terms of large body aircraft having more than three landing gears but the cost of manufacturing gears for such aircraft increases due to the higher use of titanium alloys, instead of steel, to support the structural weight of aircraft and to reduce weight of aircraft gears.
Circor Aerospace, Heroux-Devtek, Liebherr group, Messier Bugatti Dowty and UTC Aerospace systems are few of the key players in this field. Some of these companies have partnered with leading aircraft manufacturers for manufacturing landing gears offsite and to transport the finished parts for assembly to the main workshop. The market is segmented by the aircraft type (narrow, widebody and very large), gear position (nose gear and undercarriage) and geography.
