The global medical lifting slings market is expected to register a healthy CAGR of around 11.2%. In a hospital setting, the safety of patients goes beyond timely care and protection of patients from infection. Protecting the patient from falls, accidents, and injuries while ensuring safe handling of the patient is equally important, which is driving the need for medical lifting slings. Many hospitals are taking measures to implement patient safety as a part of strategic planning. Also, injuries to personnel handling the patients are a major challenge faced by the hospitals.

Need For Careful Handling of Patients

In a hospital setting, the safety of patients goes beyond timely care and protection of patients from infection. Protecting the patient from falls, accidents, and injuries while ensuring safe handling of the patient is equally important, which is driving the need for medical lifting slings. Many hospitals are taking measures to implement patient safety as a part of strategic planning. Also, injuries to personnel handling the patients are a major challenge faced by the hospitals. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2014, the overexertion injury rate in hospitals was found to be 68 per 10,000, which is twice the average, i.e., 33 per 10,000. The rate for nursing home workers was over thrice the average; at 107 per 10,000 and the rate for ambulance workers was over five times the average, at 174 per 10,000. Governments of several countries across the world are implementing various regulations to promote Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) programs, which is also increasing the demand for medical lifting slings exponentially. Other factors, such as growth in geriatric population, increasing number of people suffering from neuromuscular disorders will also affect the growth of this market positively.

The reluctance of Patients to Use Lifting Slings

Patients are reluctant to use lifting slings due to the fear of falling. Also, an infection caused by repetitive use of the sling is worrisome in many hospitals. Proper awareness about lifting slings must be spread among users so that they can better understand lifting sling. This, along with factors, such as difficulty in using a lifting sling in obese patients and lack of skilled personnel in the safe handling of patients, is restraining the market growth.

Asia-Pacific is the Fastest Growing Region

North America and Europe are the largest contributing regions to revenue, whereas Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing region in this market. Increasing geriatric population in countries, such as Japan, China, South Korea, and Singapore is responsible for the rapid growth in this region. Also, the disposable income of people is increasing the healthcare expenditure, thereby driving the demand for medical lifts and slings.

Major players - ARGO MEDICAL, ARJOHUNTLEIGH INC., BESTCARE LLC, DJO GLOBAL, DRIVE MEDICAL, GF HEALTH PRODUCTS INC, GULDMANN INC., HILL-ROM HOLDINGS INC., INVACARE CORPORATION AND PRISM MEDICAL LTD., amongst others.
