Phase change materials (PCM) are kind of materials whose phase change, from solid to liquid and vice versa. These are used to store and release the heat. The energy stored in PCM's can be use later. The PCM's property of absorbing and releasing large amounts of heat in a controlled way can be utilized to improve the thermal performance of various end use products to which the PCMs are applied.

Phase change materials (PCM) can be categories by type into organic and inorganic. These materials are sub classified as paraffins, salt hydrates and fatty acids. Eutectic liquids are used for cooling of deep frozen applications. Salt hydrates contain inorganic salt and water. It has favorable material costs, high latent melting heat, good thermal conductivity and non-combustible. The organic PCM's come from plant oil or animal fat. The range of melting temperatures is wide and lie between -30 °C and 150 °C. The latent heat is good and most vegetable fats derived from fatty acids have better efficiency than salt hydrates and paraffins. Phase change materials (PCM) has wide area of end use industry applications including building & construction, HVAC, cold chain & packaging, thermal energy storage, textile, and electronics. Phase change material (PCM) such as paraffin can be incorporated into textile materials through spinning dope, and mixing it into the insulating foams or coating, so providing a thermal regulating function.
