Biological wastewater treatment is a natural process use to purify the waste. Biological wastewater treatment is designed to degrade pollutants dissolved in effluents by the action of microorganisms. The process includes the decomposition of organic substances with the help of bacteria, nematodes, or other small organisms. When these microorganisms break down organic pollutants for food, they stick together, which creates a flocculation effect allowing the organic matter to settle out of the solution. Wastewater typically contains organic garbage, wastes, partially digested foods, pathogenic organisms, heavy metals, and toxins. This produces an easier-to-manage sludge, which is then dewatered and disposed of as solid waste. It's a most ecofriendly and environmental friendly treatment.

Biological wastewater treatment can be categories into aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic. Degradation process can take place either in the presence of oxygen (aerobic treatment) or in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic treatment).The anoxic uses molecules than oxygen for growth, such as for the removal of sulfate, nitrate, nitrite, selenate, and selenite. Aerobic treatment applied to wastewater with low to medium organic impurities (COD < 1000 ppm) and for wastewater that are difficult to biodegrade (municipal sewage, refinery wastewater etc.). The anaerobic treatment is applied for wastewater with medium to high organic impurities (COD > 1000 ppm) and easily biodegradable wastewater (food and beverage wastewater rich in starch/sugar/ alcohol).
