Electron microscopes use an accelerated beam of electrons as a source of illumination. They are used to study the nanostructure of a wide range specimens across numerous end-user segments. A scanning electron microscope is a type of electron microscope which has a magnification range of up to 200 nanometers ad can go down to a nanoscale level. Scanning electron microscopes scan the surface of a sample with a focused electron beam and are able to create an image of the sample under observation by analysing the beam-specimen interaction. This is made possible in a scanning electron microscope through the aid of multiple detectors through which data is captured about the sample's surface.

In terms of geographic contribution, the APAC region was the highest contributor to the scanning electron microscope with almost half the share of the entire market. As of 2015 and it is expected that the contribution will be more or less the same throughout the forecast period. The key reason for this is that the use of the scanning electron microscope across the key end-user segments is high in this region.
