N-hexane is an alkane with the chemical formula C6H14 which is produced from crude oil. It belongs to straight-chain saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons and is highly volatile in nature. At room temperature, it appears as a clear colourless liquid with a characteristic odour. Owing to its distinct properties, it is used as an organic solvent in extraction of cooking oils, such as soybean, cottonseed, rapeseed, etc. It also finds applications in the production of rubber, pharmaceutical, perfume, footwear, leather, textiles, furniture and painting. In recent years, n-hexane has also been used as a diluting agent, can be used for the production of adhesives, or as an organic cleanser.
