This IDC Market Perspective outlines how telcos in Europe responded during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the initial phase, with associated lockdowns in most of Europe, telcos experienced exponential mobile and data traffic growth. However, this situation did not reflect in financial results due to donations and discounting of services during the crisis. Many solutions have helped citizens and enterprises to cope with the situation. But as shown in this research, given enormous pressure, the innovation acceleration rate of telcos has been high. Forced changes in behavior among consumers, enterprises, and governments will play in favor of European telcos. COVID-19 will be a catalyst of change, speeding up digital transformation in telcos."While we see massive traffic uptake in the short term, the anticipated economic contraction might be offset by the proliferation of new technologies such as 5G, IoT, and AI that boost the uptake of the digital economy by 2021," said Martina Kurth, AVP, Head of Telco 2025 Research in Europe.
