Internet of Things (IoT) has become an accepted term finding its applications across different industry verticals. Although the quantum of connected devices in IoT platform are increasing, price, throughput, and latency become key considerations for a successful deployment. However, even though IoT platforms can be described with one common definition, their actual implementation and structure can greatly vary.This perspective discusses the evolution of IoT solutions as they engage two approaches to the creation and management of IoT platform architectures, namely cloud computing and edge computing, and summarizes their suitability for specific environments."With the inclusion of data processing and analytics requirements, technology suppliers need to focus on the vertical-specific solution and take a multifaceted approach to deployment," says Abhishek Mukherjee, senior market analyst, IDC India." Depending on the data processing and latency requirement, the IoT infrastructure can be laid out in terms of light and heavy edge, it is imperative to align the data governance, risk and compliance (GRC) policies across core and the edge infrastructure," he adds.
