This IDC Government Insights Perspective outlines the different Smart City initiatives and solutions implemented in Malaysia. Each Smart City solution addresses different challenges brought about by rapid urbanization. The key decision makers behind Smart City programs are the national and local governments, in which the national government announced Smart City initiatives to support the programs and local governments leveraged the country's initiatives to build smart solutions. Both governments have been doing enormous research to develop Smart Cities throughout Malaysia. The report covers Malaysia's journey (both in the present and future) in developing Smart Cities, which includes how cities update and develop smart solutions, how each solution addresses the core issues faced by cities, and how effective each government initiative is to support the Smart City program, as well as the future benefits of all executed smart solutions.

The strategy of Malaysia's Smart City is to make use of all available resources for the Smart City's development, thus reducing investment costs. Meanwhile, Malaysia's Smart City concept encompasses smart living, smart economy, smart people, smart environment, smart digital infrastructure, Smart Government, and smart mobility. This report also outlines the future scope of Smart City solutions in Malaysia, which shows how urban challenges can be addressed by leveraging information, data, and digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), and big data, among others, to improve the quality of living. Based on the initiatives and solutions mentioned in the report, IDC believes that Malaysia sets an interesting example for other governments in the region to tackle urbanization issues in an efficient and effective manner."IDC believes that through thorough strategic planning sessions and policies that focus on the relevance of evolving public sector digital imperatives in meeting mission-critical initiatives, local administrations in Malaysia will continually be clearer in their digital transformation (DX) outcomes and have better bargaining power to obtain funding and resources for their plans," says Gerald Wang, head, Asia/Pacific Public Sector, IDC Government Insights and IDC Health Insights.
