This IDC Perspective explores how artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of enterprise search. Enterprise knowledge architects and search administrators everywhere face the same challenge: the frustrated user who asks plaintively, "Why is it so hard to find things around here? Why doesn't our search just work like when I do a web search on Google?" While this seems like a simple proposition to users, there is a plethora of challenges associated with translating consumer-like search to the enterprise. Advancements in artificial intelligence are helping address many of these challenges."Enterprise search has traditionally lagged behind consumer search when it comes to understanding natural language queries and delivering accurate, relevant insights in context, but the need for intelligent tools that can do this effectively is stronger than ever," said Hayley Sutherland, senior research analyst for AI Software Platforms. "The timely emergence of a new generation of AI-enabled search tools, leveraging techniques and technologies like machine learning, knowledge graphs, and NLP, is helping close the gap between consumer and enterprise search capabilities, thus enabling knowledge workers to discover new contextualized insights and be more efficient, effective, and satisfied in their jobs."
