This IDC study examines and contrasts the performance of the major home video game console hardware makers and associated game software providers in aggregate in 2018. Market share changes for the Switch, Wii U, Wii, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 systems are tracked from 2011 to 2018 along several dimensions. North American dynamics are broken out from those of Western Europe, Asia/Pacific (including Japan), and a combined rest of the world (ROW) region. The state of digital-only microconsoles is considered in modest detail."Nintendo may have fallen a bit short of its goals for Switch in 2018, but that system performed well enough to wind up being the biggest relative winner in most of key global metrics tracked in TV-based gaming last year. Nintendo deserves a tip of the 'Cappy,' as it were, for helping propel total TV-based game-related spending upward 8.5% last year over 2017 and, in fact, for pushing industry revenue to its highest level since at least 2011." - Lewis Ward, IDC's research director of Gaming and VR/AR.
