This IDC study discusses the unique qualities and significance of graphene heralded as a wonder material with many unique qualities that possibly could see it supplant silicon as the preferred substrate for an entirely new generation of microelectronics.Graphene is a technological game changer with numerous applications throughout society explored in this study and will dramatically alter many segments of the global ICT sector, from enabling novel bendable screens in transparent, flexible smartphones to promising blistering fast optical chips and wireless networks 1,000 times faster than today's 4G networks, and more powerful yet smaller Internet of Things (IoT) sensors.

"The discovery of graphene and exploitation of its myriad qualities are the greatest discoveries of all times," says study author Lawrence Surtees, vice president and principal analyst in the Communications Practice at IDC Canada Ltd. "Graphene's commercialization is already upon us, and Canada must redouble efforts to further develop and exploit it. Firms that fail to recognize graphene's importance and incorporate it in their products and systems over the next decade risk being left behind, quite literally in carbon's dust."
