This IDC study is a technology assessment of the evolving flash-optimized array market, which is rapidly transitioning from traditional storage architectures to flash-optimized architectures that have specifically been built with flash in mind. This move to flash is transforming not only the IT infrastructure but also business processes. This study provides a definition of flash-optimized architectures, discusses changes in this market since the original study in this area (see Flash Optimized Storage Architectures, IDC #249295, June 2014) as well as the current state of the market, and provides a set of features IT practitioners can use when evaluating upcoming flash-optimized array purchases of both the AFA and the HFA type. Storage vendors can also use this list as an input to their product planning processes going forward.

"With 78.9% of enterprises already using flash in production environments, no IT manager should be making a primary storage purchase decision without considering flash," said Eric Burgener, research director for IDC's Storage Practice. "Flash brings much more than just performance to the table - it increases infrastructure density and efficiency, lowers energy and floor space costs, and brings the opportunity for not only IT infrastructure transformation but also business transformation that can open up new markets, business models, and customer opportunities; improve employee productivity and customer service; and drive higher revenue."
