This IDC study provides a framework for CIOs and the IT management team, CFOs, and LOB managers to determine the optimum product mix of internal IT and cloud solutions based upon an in-depth analysis of the IT application/service portfolio. The resulting balance of applications running on a hybrid model of internal and provider-based cloud solutions can be viewed as a company's "sweet spot" in the cloud. This study describes a seven-step "application to the cloud" analysis to determine which applications are serious candidates for cloud solutions. This analysis requires IT to manage the application/service portfolio with much more business rigor, including clear product descriptions, clear product costs and, in general, "running IT as an internal SaaS business."

"If an organization does the seven-step 'application to the cloud' analysis, it can determine its optimum mix of internal and cloud-based solutions," says Robert Multhaup, adjunct analyst with IDC's Research Network. "IT itself and the application/service portfolio will be substantially strengthened, and IT will be challenged to upgrade its business to compete on the open market."
