This IDC study outlines the current taxonomy for the wearable computing devices market. Given the speed at which the market is growing and the new and varied devices being introduced and launched, we have revisited our previous taxonomy to draw sharper boundaries between what is included and what is excluded.

"The wearable computing devices market has quickly evolved since we last visited our taxonomy, and while devices of all stripes and types have been introduced, not all of them should be truly considered as wearable computing devices," says Ramon Llamas, research manager for IDC's Wearable Computing Devices team. "For us, a wearable computing device must have a microprocessor, be capable of logic and processing data, be worn exclusively on the body, and connect to a network either directly (via cellular or WiFi) or indirectly (via smart compute device). By drawing these distinctions, we separate the new wearables market of smart watches, eyewear, and health and fitness bands apart from the old market of digital watches, cameras, and Bluetooth headsets. Moreover, we can more easily classify new and upcoming devices as wearable computing or not."

"Beyond our taxonomy and subcategories, we also acknowledge the opportunities and challenges that the wearable computing devices market faces," adds Llamas. "Vendors are experimenting with the hardware, and likewise developers are trying to assemble the right application experience. Moreover, the consumer and commercial use cases and expectations are still getting established. These will take time to develop. Still, what should not be overlooked is the opportunity for wearables within the same areas, especially as it pertains to the four pillars of big data, cloud, mobility, and social media."
