Direct to film-polyethylene terephthalate (DTF-PET) is the technology starting to emerge in the middle of the pandemic. We are seeing the technology getting adopted everywhere and capturing the entry-level market. So far, Chinese brands dominate DTF-PET market. The workflow of DTF-PET may be more complex than that of other technologies, but it has surprisingly become one of the fastest technologies. This IDC research assesses the technology, cost, workflow, and application of DTF-PET. DTF-PET printers show more advantages than the existing technologies in the graphic textile industry, such as direct to garment (DTG), dye sublimation, and Flexprint (Polyflex). It also has a market share in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) (APEJ) region, showing significant movement in terms of shipments. DTF-PET can be categorized as the technology in the stage of "early majority" and has not yet captured the main market in the graphic textile business. DTF-PET could not compete with the dye sublimation market yet and is still behind DTG in terms of shipment numbers and popularity. However, IDC believes this technology has all the potential to cross the chasm and become the next solution of the graphic textile business, especially when flagship vendors join as the suppliers too."IDC expects DTF-PET to become the most alternative technology in the graphic textile industry and grows significantly in the future. We expect flagship brands to explore this method and technology," said Muhammad Faris Latief, market analyst, IDC's Imaging, Printing, and Document Solutions (IPDS).
