This IDC study looks at the emerging role of satellite edge computing (SatMEC) and its various topologies and deployment as an edge infrastructure as a service (IaaS). SatMEC opens the possibility of offering satellite edge-based IaaS as an augmentation to existing terrestrial edge compute resources. There are many industry use cases that can benefit from this type of IaaS, which will need to be presented as an extension to existing or planned terrestrial MEC services. Low Earth orbit (LEO), middle Earth orbit (MEO), and geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites can all participate in edge computing, but LEOs offer more flexibility in terms of backhauling and in distributed caching and compute. "The era of satellite edge computing is just beginning, and we can expect major incumbents, hyperscalers, and technology companies to pursue opportunities in areas that will be spurred by the large LEO constellations coming online in the next several years," says Bill Rojas, adjunct research director, IDC Asia/Pacific IoT and Telecommunications Group.
