Global marine scrubber systems market is garnering momentum and it is expected to record substantial gains over the next few years. Marine scrubber systems, which are otherwise known as exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS), are used to remove harmful components and particulate matter, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) generated during combustion processes in marine engines, in order to implement pollution control. These systems are developed and utilized to treat exhaust gasses from engines, boilers, and auxiliary engines of onshore and onboard marine vessels to minimize the impact of these gases on human health as well as the environment.

On the basis of technology, marine scrubber systems industry is classified into wet and dry systems. The wet technology segment includes open loop, closed loop, and hybrid systems. Hybrid technology segment accounted for more than 20% revenue share of Europe marine scrubber systems industry in 2019 and will experience substantial growth by 2026.

Global marine scrubber systems market is segmented into MGO, MDO, hybrid, and others depending upon the fuel. MDO fuel segment is likely to account for over 60% market share by volume in the Asia Pacific region by 2026.

The other fuels segment is projected to witness substantial growth over the same period, with increased deployment across the shipping industry. These trends can be associated with booming marine trade activities worldwide. In addition, strict regulatory norms pertaining to sulphur emissions will positively impact the market outlook.

In January 2020, international sulphur emission regulations were updated under the Marpol Treaty. As per the new norms introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the sulphur content in marine fuels carried by merchant vessels had been limited to 0.50% across the globe, and 0.10% m/m in the Emission Control Areas (ECAs), which include the North Sea area, the Baltic Sea area, Canada, the United States, and the United States Caribbean Sea area. Earlier, the maximum sulphur cap in marine fuels had been set at 3.5% m/m.

Complying with the updated norms will require vessels to either clean the exhaust gases using efficient scrubbing systems or switch to fuels with low sulphur content. Consequently, exhaust gas scrubbers are likely to be installed in an increasing number of ships in order to comply with international standards and regulations economically.

In terms of the applications, global marine scrubber systems market is bifurcated into commercial, recreational, and offshore applications.
