North America plays an important role in the global refining industry. It accounts for 23.6% of the total global refining capacity. The largest refineries of North America are Port Arthur II (United States), Baytown (United States), Garyville (United States), Baton Rouge (United States) and Texas City III (United States).

Refining capacity in North America increased from 23,136 mbd in 2012 at an AAGR of 0.8%. It is expected to increase at an AAGR of 0.7% from 2017 to 2022. On the same lines, Crude distillation unit capacity in North America increased from 23,041 mbd in 2012 at an AAGR of 0.6%. It is expected to see the same growth from 2017 to 2022. On the other hand, Catalytic cracker unit capacity in North America decreased from 6,890mbd in 2012 at anegative AAGR of -0.1%. It is expected to increase to 6,893 mbd in 2022 at an AAGR of 0.1%.
