By 2022, the CO2 emissions standards in Europe and CAFÉ targets in the US and APAC will lead to DCTs being used by several OEMs as a more fuel efficient transmission variant. Smaller downsized engines with displacement of not more than 2L will also increasingly use DCTs with 8 and 9 speed ratios.
DCTs will be used in plug-in hybrid applications for mid-size vehicles, large cars, and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs).
China, one of the biggest markets in the future for DCT, will have a mix of dry and wet dual clutch transmissions. Suppliers will focus on the development of advanced iterations of low torque, wet clutch transmissions, making them cost effective. The adoption of DCTs in the Western European market will be higher, as the lower maximum temperatures do not affect heat dissipation in DCT when under high load.
