Market Overview
Calcium hypochlorite is an inorganic compound used for the water treatment as the bleaching agents. It decomposes in water releasing oxygen and chlorine. It is used to treat the wells, lakes, ponds, water bodies filters, controlling and removing algae in reservoirs, and others. Moreover, it helps in the prevention of water-related diseases such as cholera and typhoid.
The global calcium hypochlorite market valued USD XX million in 2018 and it is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX% to reach USD XX million by 2026.
The market growth is driven by technological development, new projects and up-gradation of existing machinery in attempts to increase annual productivity and operational flow. For instance, in December 2019, Nuberg EPC had received a contract for the expansion of an existing 45-tonnes-per-day (tpd) chlor-alkali plant and greenfield calcium chloride plant project in Sohar, Oman, by Oman Chlorine. The production capacity would be 80 tpd for calcium chloride plant and 30 tpd for the chlor-alkali plant.
Further, the market growth is accelerated by the increasing usage of calcium hypochlorite to sanitize and disinfecting swimming pools, wastewater treatment plants, water treatment plants and sewage for the removal of undesirable compounds and microbial contaminants from the water. It is being used for the prevention of water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, etc. There is a rising demand for calcium hypochlorite for house cleaning, paper, agrochemicals, and pulp sectors.
Increasing government initiatives and rising awareness for water treatment and wastewater treatment is further accelerating market growth. For instance, in April 2018, the World Bank launched the "Wastewater: From Waste to Resource" initiative to raise awareness regarding the potential of wastewater as a resource for energy, clean water, biosolids and nutrients.
However, several health disorders such as pulmonary edema, irritation, and burning of eyes, lungs and skin due to overexposure of calcium hypochlorite are hindering the market growth.
Segment Analysis
The global calcium hypochlorite market is segmented based on product form as a powder, pellet, and granule. Powder form dominates the calcium hypochlorite market owing to the cost-effectiveness of the powder form in comparison to the other forms.
Further, the market is also classified on the basis of application into house cleaners and detergents, agrochemicals, water treatment, pulp and paper, food and beverage and others. The water treatment segment accounts for the highest market share due to the extensive use of calcium hypochlorite for the disinfecting swimming pools, wastewater treatment plants, and water treatment plants across the globe.
Geographical Presentation
By region, the global calcium hypochlorite market is segmented into North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle-East and Africa. Among all of the regions, North America and Europe are the regions with a significant share due to the rising demand for calcium hypochlorite.
The Asia Pacific is also witnessing the high usage of the calcium hypochlorite for water treatment, house cleaners & detergent applications. Japan, China, South Korea, and India are witnessing the strong research and development activities related to calcium hypochlorite. Growing urbanization, rising disposable income, and growing purchasing power of the people are the factors increasing the demand for the calcium hypochlorite market in India and China.
Competitive Analysis
The global calcium hypochlorite market is witnessing stiff competition due to the presence of several local and international market players. China Petrochemical Corporation, Lonza Group Ltd., Nippon Soda Co., Ltd, Westlake Chemical Corporation, Sree Rayalaseema Hi-Strength Hypo Ltd., Tianjin Kaifeng Chemical Co., Ltd., and Yuzhoushi Weilite Chemical Co., Ltd are the leading players with the maximum share in the market. Companies are focusing on improving operation flow and strengthening their distribution networks to improve their sales. For instance, in March 2018, Tosoh Corporation established the holding company named Tosoh China Holdings Co., Ltd. (Tosoh China) in Shanghai for the growth of business operations in the markets. Tosoh China would enable the Tosoh Group to formulate a more effective operating structure and reinforce the governance of group companies in China. It would help in strengthening its business foundation in the country.
Several companies are entering into the collaborations, mergers, strategic partnerships and acquisitions to increase the demand for calcium hypochlorite market and their expansion across the globe. For instance, in August 2016, Westlake Chemical Corporation had acquired Axiall Corporation for USD 33.00 per share in an all-cash transaction, representing an enterprise value of approximately USD3.8 billion, including debt and certain other Axiall liabilities. The combined entity would be the third-largest chlor-alkali producer and the second-largest polyvinyl chloride (PVC) producer in North America
