Global Hydrogen Cyanide Market- Overview

Hydrogen cyanide, also called prussic acid, is a chemical compound having the formula, HCN. Hydrogen cyanide is available in the form of toxic liquid or colorless gas, which is highly poisonous. It is a linear molecule, with a triple bond between carbon and nitrogen. Hydrogen cyanide is found in the smoke of various tobacco products and is also released by combustion of nitrogen-containing organic materials.

Increasing demand for manufacturing of Sodium Cyanide and Potassium Cyanide is driving the market for Hydrogen cyanide. Potassium Cyanide and Sodium Cyanide are widely used in the organic synthesis for the production of nitriles and carboxylic acids. However, these are used mainly in gold and silver mining, and also for electroplating of these materials.

Hydrogen Cyanide is primarily used to make intermediates for other products - Adiponitrile and acetone cyanohydrin which in itself is an intermediate for methyl methacrylate. As for methyl methacrylate, methods exist to produce it using C-3 and C-4 hydrocarbons instead of acetpme cyanohydrine. The large plants are operated by DuPont, Rohm and Haas, Novartis, and Cyanco in the United States; ICI, Butachemie, Rohm, and Elf-Atochem in Western Europe; and Mitsubishi Gas in Japan.
