Geotextile tubes create a synthetic barrier used along shorelines and beaches to maintain control erosion. Often referred to as breakwater tubes, these barriers serve as the first line of defense against waves and tidal action. Geotextile tubes help areas retain sand/shorelines and prevent further erosion or loss in the area.

Geotextile tubes offer a viable option to wet hauling, sludge lagoons, sand drying beds and other mechanical methods used for dewatering. The dewatering method employed by geotextile tubes offers an environmentally friendly way to reuse decanted water and water placed into storm drainages or water tables. Because of the high dewatering speed of geotextile tubes compared to open-air pits and heavy equipment, it is being widely utilized in numerous applications. Geotextile tubes are fabricated to precise tolerances that allow them to be utilized for dewatering contaminated sediments, copper tailings, fly ash and numerous marinas, lakes and rivers.

The installation of geotextile tubes can be temporary or permanent. Geotextile tubes are constructed stronger in comparison to the standard sandbags. Hence, it has several civil engineering and erosion control projects like embankments, retaining walls, reservoirs, bank protection and coastal erosion control.

Various projects have adopted the use of geotextile tubes for the protection of the environment. For instance, in 2021, U.S Environmental Protection Agency, in partnership with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, has started a US$16 million Great Lakes Legacy Act cleanup in the St. Louis River Area. A dredge will remove about 45,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment from backwater ponds and Shopper's Creek adjacent. The plan aims to cover the ponds with a 6-inch layer of sediment to create a barrier against any contamination and provide a healthy habitat for native organisms. Dredged sediment will be deposited over the winter in geotextile tubes acting as a large filter to drain water. In the spring, dried sediment will be transferred from the geotextile tubes and taken off-site for disposal.

The geotextile tube is majorly manufactured from polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyethylene and other raw materials. The price of geotextile tubes depends on the prices of petroleum hydrocarbon and the changing price of the materials to decide the cost structure of the final products.
