Market Overview:

The global moringa market valued USD XX million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD XX million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of XX%.

Moringa is a genus of shrubs and trees with multi-purpose uses: its leaves, roots and immature pods are consumed as a vegetable. Moringa is an important crop in India, Ethiopia, the Philippines and the Sudan, and is being grown in West, East and South Africa, tropical Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Florida and the Pacific Islands. All parts of the moringa tree - bark, pods, leaves, nuts, seeds, tubers, roots, and flowers - are edible. The leaves are used fresh or dried and ground into powder. The seed pods are picked while still green and eaten fresh or cooked. Moringa seed oil is sweet, non-sticking, non-drying and resists rancidity, while the cake from seed is used to purify drinking water. The seeds are also be eaten green, roasted, powdered and steeped for tea or used in curries. Increase in awareness among consumers regarding health benefits of this plant is one of the major reasons for the market growth. It has antifungal, antiviral, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are beneficial in healing various diseases.

Market Dynamics:

As moringa contains rich source of various nutrients, there is an increasing demand for its products

Moringa contains various healthful compounds such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, folate, calcium potassium, iron, and zinc. It is also extremely low in fats and contains no harmful cholesterol. Moringa leaves are an excellent source of many vitamins and minerals. In Western countries, the dried leaves are sold as dietary supplements, either in powder or capsule form. Compared to the leaves, the pods are generally lower in vitamins and minerals. However, they are exceptionally rich in vitamin C. Moringa oleifera is also rich in antioxidants. In addition to vitamin C and beta-carotene, these include quercetin, and chlorogenic acid. One study in women found that taking 1.5 teaspoons (7 grams) of moringa leaf powder every day for three months significantly increased blood antioxidant levels. Moringa leaf extract may also be used as a food preservative. It increases the shelf life of meat by reducing oxidation. It is also one of the best products to treat malnutrition children younger than 3 years.

Although the product has various advantages but there are certain market entry barriers such as technological requirements for drying moringa as well as requirements for organic certification. Drying moringa leaves requires suitable drying equipment and logistical arrangements. Moringa leaves need to be processed directly after harvesting to prevent quality deterioration. In most of the countries, organic certification for moringa is mandatory before using it for nutritional supplements. Moringa cannot be exported if the product is not organically certified.

Market Segmentation:

Increasing usage of moringa seeds in water purification boost the demand

Moringa oleifera seed proteins have been suggested as the most effective natural coagulant/flocculant for water purification purposes. Seeds from the Moringa tree have unique water purification properties. The seed extract can separate unwanted particulates from water sedimenting impurities. They also have potential as anti-microbial treatment - the unprocessed seed powder may sediment over 90% of the bacteria from raw water. Seeds from Moringa oleifera are approved for water treatment in Africa and South Asian countries. The low cost and high availability of this seed material represents an important opportunity in developing sustainable water purification, and could help provide clean water to small communities in developing countries where Moringa grows.

Based on type, leaf powder accounted for the largest market share of more than YY% in the year 2020. Growing demand for nutritional supplements as a part of daily diet is one of the major factors for the segment growth. Leaf powder is used in making useful medicines that help in treating a wide variety of skin problems. Leaf extracts might help treat some stomach disorders, such as constipation, gastritis, and ulcerative colitis. The antibiotic and antibacterial properties of moringa may help inhibit the growth of various pathogens, and its high vitamin B content helps with digestion. Moringa powder can last for a longer time and can also be transported easily, and hence it is more preferred in this form as compared to the other forms.

Geographical Penetration:

Asia-Pacific is expected to dominate the global moringa market

Asia-Pacific holds domination globally, as moringa trees are native to India. India is a forerunning supplier of moringa oil, moringa leaf, moringa seeds, and moringa fruits in region, which adds more to the growth of the market. India is the leading producer of moringa drumsticks in the wold with a production of 2.2 million tonnes of tender fruits annually, according to Agri Exchange. The production area is around 43,600 hectares; the main producing states include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In India, most moringa is produced on large plantations. India has started the export of moringa powder, a nutritional supplement, with the first consignment sent to the United States in December 2020. Two tonne of organic certified Moringa powder were sent to the US through air consignment. Telangana-based Medikonda Nutrients has 240 hectares of moringa plantation.

On the other hand, Europe is expected to hold significant market revenue share in the year 2020. Demand for moringa is increasing in the European market. It has a range of health benefits that makes it appealing to European consumers who are looking for natural health products to improve their health and well-being. Demand for moringa in nutritional supplements is increasing because of an ageing population, rising veganism and vegetarianism, growing need to reduce calories and weight loss. In the European health products market, moringa oleifera leaf powder is mainly used in food supplements and as a powder, because of its nutrients and beneficial health properties. Health products suppliers in Europe market moringa on its high vitamin and antioxidant content. African moringa, Moringa stenopetala, is also present in the European market, but its share remains small.

The global moringa market is fragmented many players such as Ancient Greenfields Pvt Ltd, Earth Expo Company, Herbs & Crops Overseas, Saipro Biotech Private Limited, Moringa Oleifera Corporation Pvt Ltd, and All Moringa among others. The market is identified by several activities such as expansions, mergers and acquisitions, and product and technological innovation, attempted by the key manufacturers in the industry. For instance, in February 2019, All Moringa has launched a new natural luxury brand of wellness and health products. The therapeutic skincare and internal supplements are made using Moringa tree and are 100% pure with no synthetic ingredients added. In September 2019, Kuli Kuli, a brand that controls more than half of the U.S. retail moringa market, started into 2,500 Walmart stores nationwide to stimulate the momentum. In a recent study, it was found that moringa can prepare a kind of medicine that can delay diabetes for 10-15 years. Hence, most of the pharma companies are doing extensive research to develop various kinds of medicines from moringa.

COVID-19 Impact: Pandemic has positively impacted the global moringa market
