Market Overview:

Asparagus is a vegetable that belongs to the Asparagaceae family. There are more than 200 species within this plant family. Some species are grown as ornamental plants and others are used by florists in arrangements and corsages. Asparagus is low in calories and a great source of nutrients, including fiber, folate, and vitamins A, C, and K. Additionally, asparagus provides several potential health benefits, including weight loss, improved digestion, healthy pregnancy outcomes, and lower blood pressure. It is one of very few perennial vegetables, that grow back year after year. It is an early season crop that lends itself well to small-scale and part-time farming operations as well as direct-to-consumer retail marketers when combined with other corps. Asparagus grows in temperate or subtropical climates in soils that are not too acidic. China, Thailand, Mexico, Peru, and Germany are the countries growing most of the world's asparagus. Asparagus is available year-round, and its health benefits and versatility in cooking make it a popular choice across many demographics. Asparagus sales held mostly steady in 2019, accounting for nearly $760 million in sales. The global asparagus market was valued at USD XX million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD XX million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of XX%.

Market Dynamics:

Growing demand for asparagus owing to its various health benefits

Asparagus offers many health benefits, especially because it contains several micronutrients that offer big benefits. Asparagus contains glutathione, which is a cancer-fighter. Rutin, which helps to strengthen blood vessels, is plentiful in asparagus. Asparagus has the most folacin of any vegetable, which means that eating it can help prevent neural tube defects in babies. Asparagus also contains chromium, which helps insulin carry glucose into cells. Asparagus is also rich in fiber, which has been linked to lower body weight and weight loss. Moreover, Asparagus can be used in a number of dishes like salads, stir-fries, frittatas, omelets and pastas, and it makes an excellent side dish. It can be cooked in a variety of ways, including boiling, grilling, steaming, roasting and sauteing

Furthermore, increasing demand for organic asparagus is expected to drive the global asparagus market. The markets for organic asparagus are majorly dominated by North America and Europe, with the regions substantially increasing the import as well as the production of organic asparagus in recent years. Although organically cultivated asparagus is at its nascent stage in Peru, the second-largest producer of asparagus in the world, the country is steadily raising its export-driven organic cultivation, as per Peruvian Asparagus Importer's Association. Moreover, organic asparagus cultivation is concentrated in central Mexico for supplies to the United States, having several growers like Pampa Store, which now engages in year-round production with the purchase of 300 ha of land in the north-east of Mexico, bordering the state of Texas, United States, in 2019. According to the Organic Produce Network, in January 2020, a case of organic asparagus weighing 11 pounds, produced in Mexico, had a price of USD 64.0-65.0 on the Los Angeles Wholesale Produce Market, which is almost USD 6.0 per pound wholesale price, that can be attributed to the cost of year-round availability of the vegetable on market shelves. As a result, the Jacobs, Malcolm & Burtt (JMB) plans to undertake the production of organic production in early 2020, with a view to aid the year-round domestic demand in the country. These developments are further anticipated to drive the global asparagus market, during the forecast period.

Market Segmentation:

Green asparagus is expected to dominate the global asparagus market

Asparagus is widely available in two color variants-green and white. Some countries such as Netherlands, Belgium and Peru are more familiar with white varieties, while others, like UK, usually only see green form in supermarkets. Green asparagus form traditionally a much bigger global market to the extent that some countries only demand green form and consumers are not even aware of white variants. Agronomically, the significant difference is whether the shoots are harvested above ground (green) or underground before reaching the surface/light (white). Botanically, both are a single species and used to produce both variants.

Based on type, fresh asparagus is expected to dominate the global asparagus market. Fresh asparagus is highly preferred over its canned and frozen counterparts in the global asparagus market. The shelf life of fresh asparagus can be extended by pickling the asparagus, adding preservatives or even keeping it in brine. It is very easy to store asparagus products in any of these forms and they can even be enjoyed for the entire year. As a vegetable, asparagus is quite popular to prepare ready-to-eat foods, and asparagus is grated and mixed with other food products such as mixed vegetables and chicken to concoct truly delicious preparations. An increasing demand for asparagus in fresh food products such as brine and pickled asparagus, soups and sauces is likely to give a good boost to the revenue growth of the fresh segment by type in the global asparagus market.

Geographical Penetration:

Asia Pacific is expected to dominate the global asparagus market by revenue in 2020

Asia Pacific held market revenue share of YY% in the year 2020. The market is dominated by China, being the largest asparagus producing country in the world. China has an average annual fresh asparagus production volume of more than 900 thousand tons, which equals 46% of the global production volume in 2018. China produced 8,303, 392 metric tons of asparagus in the year 2020. Furthermore, the labor costs for the plantation and harvesting of green asparagus is lower than the labor cost for plantation and harvest of white asparagus in China. It is precisely for that reason that the surface area devoted to the plantation of green asparagus is continuously increasing. At the same time, the living standards of Chinese consumers increasing.

North America is expected to hold significant market revenue share in the year 2020. The United States is leading the North America asparagus market. Most of the asparagus harvested in the United States is sold as fresh. The national average yield in 2020 was around 3,875 pounds per acre. In 2019, total asparagus production was 74.37 million pounds. Approximately 502.4 million pounds of fresh asparagus was imported in 2017, mostly from Mexico, Peru and Chile. The value of the 2020 utilized U.S. commercial asparagus crop was approximately $85.2 million. On the other hand, Mexico is expected to be the fastest growing country in the region. According to Mexico's Ministry of Agriculture, the country became the world's leading exporter of asparagus after exporting 173,000 tons of fresh asparagus in 2020. 99.9% of the production (a total of 173,356 tons) was sent to the United States; 26 tons were shipped to Spain, and 25 tons to Japan. Mexico also ships asparagus to the United Kingdom, Belize, Panama, Hong Kong, the United Arab Emirates, El Salvador, and Malaysia.

Europe is expected to be the fastest growing region in the global asparagus market. The region witnessed a massive growth in domestic demand, which can be primarily attributed to the increasing awareness about the nutritional benefits of asparagus. Europe also produced a total quantity of 332,126.0 metric tons of asparagus with a total harvested area of 62,727.0 hectares in 2018, when compared to 305,859.0 metric tons and 58,306.0 hectares in 2016. Moreover, the region also imported a total of 121,229.0 metric tons of asparagus in 2019, as against 112,417.0 metric tons in 2017. Apart from the growing imports, a sizeable portion of the domestic demand is also driven by home-grown varieties, such as Vittorio or white asparagus, which was first bred in northern Italy. According to Global Plant Genetics, the seeds of the Vittorio variety sold out well ahead of the 2019-2020 growing season, with domestic producers in northern and central Europe increasingly inclining towards the high-yielding and flavorful cultivar.

Competitive Landscape:

The global asparagus market is highly segregated with many local and regional players such as Altar Produce, Limgroup B.V, Thiermann GmbH & Co. KGJersey Asparagus Farms, Inc., and Walker Brothers, Inc among others. Product launches, and acquisitions are some of the key strategies adopted by players in asparagus market. For instance, in November 2020, Enza Zaden launched first white asparagus variety Daleza F1. In August 2017, microwaveable asparagus has joined the value-added lineup at Salinas, Calif.-based NewStar Fresh Foods. Asparagus is the perfect extension to their recent launch of fresh herbs, culinary herbs and green onions in the Pick Me brand of products.

COVID-19 Impact: Pandemic has negatively impacted the global asparagus market

Restrictions on movement across the countries in Europe and the rest of the world has created major disruption globally. Extra checks at borders lead to delays that are detrimental to perishable goods. In addition, some countries quarantine trucks and/or drivers; thereby, significantly reducing ground fleets, especially in Europe. Quarantines also apply to ships, which need to stay longer on the port as a result, leading to increased risks of produce damage and longer delays supplying markets. In Europe, asparagus was the canary in the coal mine. Widespread lockdowns and restrictions on movement across international borders meant big challenges for the usual army of seasonal workers who travel to pick, sort and pack fresh produce on farms across Europe. The agriculture workforce has been significantly reduced due to travel restrictions. The sector relies heavily on seasonal labor. Harvesting season is imminent for many products and the lack of workers poses a severe constraint that could lead to loss of produce and shortages in the market. Furthermore, concerns regarding available labor with the newly implemented travel bans within the European Union and the closure of the Schengen area, many seasonal workers will no longer be able to travel to production sites.

Moreover, China is the largest producer of asparagus in the country and covid-19 has negatively impacted the market in this country. Due to the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the country's asparagus planting area and the fresh asparagus transaction price have both declined. The total area of asparagus planted nationwide was about 90,000 hectares in 2020, a decrease of 5% from 2019. The total transaction amount in the national market was close to 2.5 billion USD, a decrease of 19% from 2019.
