Market Overview:

Millets are a form of small-seeded cereal with high nutritional value. There are nearly 6,000 varieties of millets worldwide with various colors such as white, pale yellow, gray and red. They are superior to other commonly consumed cereals, such as rice and wheat, in terms of nutritional value. Increasing interest in reviving millet consumption in various countries has boosted the market's growth prospects in recent years. Several initiatives are also being undertaken toward enhancing millet cultivation and consumption to reduce health risks caused due to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases. Millets have a high content of minerals and proteins such as iron and calcium to help avoid such diseases. Millet is among the most important nutrients for humans, with a global production of 25 million tons per year. The global millets market is likely to reach USD xx million in 2028, from its recorded value of USD xx million in 2020, growing with a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period.

Market Dynamics: Health benefits offered by millets is expected to drive the demand for millets

Millet consumption is associated with the curing of various types of diseases. For instance, the high fiber levels present in millet reduce low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol. Besides, millet's high fiber content reduces blood pressure and thus minimizing the risk of heart attacks. By 2030, the number of patients with cardiovascular disease grows more than 23.6 million, giving a good boost to millet consumption. Likewise, the magnesium content in millets helps in improving insulin sensitivity and in preventing type 2 diabetes. Being rich in iron and folic acid, millets prevent anemia and maintain the right level of hemoglobin in the body. Also, it avoids other diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular problems-heart attack, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmias. The application of millets in nutrition products and infant food is increasing at an alarming rate due to millets' high nutritional content. Therefore, rising awareness among consumers about the health benefits associated with regular consumption of millets is expected to drive the millets market growth.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, water withdrawals in developing countries are expected to rise by 50% by 2025, and by 18% in developed countries. Groundwater is being used faster than it can be replenished in 60% of European cities with more than 100,000 people. Millet grows easily in dry climate, have smaller harvesting period and require minimal water quantity. Hence, they can be a sustainable alternative to rice and wheat, as a new staple food.

Farmers in Asia Pacific, especially India and China, have begun to prefer millets cultivation over rice and wheat cultivation due to steadily growing demand from urban populations. High product prices compared with largely consumed grains are acting as a hindrance for penetration in the urban food market. These high prices are due to lower production volume and weak supply chain in millets market than rice and wheat.

Market Segmentation: Pearl millets segment is expected to hold highest market share of XX% during the forecast period.

In 2020, pearl millets segment dominated the market, accounting for XX% of global sales and growing with a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period. Massive demand share of pearl millets is due to its rich nutritional value as it has 8 times higher iron content than rice. The increased share of pearl millet is related to the cultivation and consumption pattern of the region it is grown in. Pearl millet thrives in hot climates and is drought resistant. In hot and dry regions, it grows better than any other cereal. On sandy soils, pearl millet yields well, while most other crops struggle. It is the most widely grown millet in Africa. It is also India's fourth most significant food crop or cereal.

The breakfast foods segment accounted for the largest share of the global millets market, whereas the bakery products segment is expected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period. As per the study published in Journal of Texture Studies, the replacement of wheat flour by 60% finger millets increases the nutritional value or texture of muffins. Millets flours especially white teff and proso millets are being rapidly produced in western countries, as gluten free flours for the production of pasta and baked goods. In Africa, there is expanding small-scale manufacture of convenience-type versions of traditional millet-based foods. These products cater for the needs of the growing numbers of urban middle-class consumers who are ready to pay premium price for millets.

Geographical Penetration: According to FAO, the global millet production was estimated at 28.4 million metric ton in 2019. India is the largest global producer with a 41.0% global market share.

Asia Pacific and Africa are the major regions where almost all millet varieties are produced. Millets are popular in developing regions, like India and Africa, where food and nutritional security are the major challenges. The high drought tolerance capacity of the crop allows it to be cultivated in the adverse environmental conditions of the regions. As a result, Asia Pacific, led by India, produced revenue of more than USD XX billion in 2020 and is expected to grow significantly over the forecast period.

In Nigeria, millet accounts for around 75% of total cereal food intake and over 30% in most other Sahel countries. It is also important in Namibia (where it accounts for 25% of total cereal food consumption) and Uganda (where it accounts for 5% of total cereal food consumption) (20 percent). Nigeria is a known producer of foxtail and pearl products. The governments of these countries have recognized the product's value in terms of food security and environmental sustainability. As a result, they are gradually increasing yield and introducing the product to the population in various processed forms.

Competitive Landscape:

The global millets market is largely unorganized and fragmented. The products have the presence of various medium-sized processors. They are largely grown by small landholding farmers and farmers organizations. Millet's processors such as Janadhanya Farmers Producer Company Limited and Dharani FaM CooP Ltd are farmer producing organizations, which process and sell crops procured from farmers. Processors such as Treta Agro (P) Ltd and Sresta Natural Bioproducts Pvt Ltd are expanding their presence in the product business by increasing the number of distributors and export to North America and Europe.

COVID-19 Impact: Positive impact on the global millets market

COVID-19's situation in 2020 had a positive effect on the millet market, as the demand for healthy foods is expected to grow among consumers. People are becoming more health conscious due the pandemic. On the negative hand, the industry has undergone supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, and the closure of small production units as a result of the repeated lockdowns. Despite all these negative consequences, there was a significant increase in retail sales. Opting towards healthy meals to boost immunity, people shifted from having junk foods to eat nutrient-rich superfoods like millets and their derivatives. During the forecast period, market demand for millets as a healthy alternative is expected to increase.
