Market Overview:

Insect repellents are used to protect the body from the bites of insects. While some bites because local skin irritation, some can be the source of serious illnesses and possibly death as the insects act as vectors of many diseases with high death rates. Insect repellents are presently categorized into two categories: chemical repellents and natural plant-derived repellents. The most well-known chemical repellent is DEET (N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide). Other chemical insect repellents comprise IR3535, MGK-326 and MGK-264. Plant-based insect repellents are gradually capturing market share because of their low toxicity but are not as effective as DEET yet. These include citronella, soybean oil and eucalyptus products. Most insect repellents along with DEET work on the principle of generating a vapor barrier that prevents the insect from coming into contact with the skin of the user. To the insect, the vapor has an offensive or irritating smell and tastes bad. The global body worn insect repellent market valued USD XX million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD XX million by 2028, growing at a CAGR of XX%.

Market Dynamics: Growing health awareness is driving the body worn insect repellent market

The growing number of deadly diseases spreading due to mosquitoes and other insects such as malaria, West Nile virus, dengue fever, and chikungunya fever, mainly in developing regions has increased the demand for body-worn insect repellents. For instance, according to WHO, vector-borne diseases account for over 17 percent of all infectious diseases and are the reason for more than 700 000 deaths annually. It is estimated that malaria causes approximately 219 million cases globally, and leads to over 400,000 deaths every year itself. Additionally, dengue is the most common viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes with over 96 million symptomatic cases and an estimated 40,000 deaths every year. The high probability of infection with disease and increasing awareness of preventive methods among the consumers is driving the growth of body worn insect repellent market.

At present, due to various side effects of chemical repellents and availability of plant-based repellents with minimized effects such as Oil of lemon eucalyptus, the demand for plant-based repellents is growing, expanding the overall market. Manufacturers are now focusing on the production of body-worn insect repellents that are based on naturally occurring compounds to minimize the negative effects of these products on the environment. Even if plant-based repellents are trending globally, manufacturers are mainly focusing on solving the manufacturing challenges of transforming a natural plant oil into a commercial product. Even if Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) is one of the most widely used insect repellents across the world, according to industry experts, the trend is likely to change during the forecast period, as research activities are in full swing to introduce environment-friendly and effective insect-repelling solutions.

But, stringent government regulations are expected to hinder the body-worn insect repellent market growth.

Market Segmentation: Apparel market is the dominating type segment, due to growing health awareness.

In terms of raw material, the global body-worn insect repellent market is dominated by DEET with a market share of XX% in 2020. These are the most common ingredient used to make insect repellent lotions, creams, gels, aerosol and pump sprays, and impregnated towelettes. It is in high demand, due to its excellent safety record. According to various surveys, over the last 50 years of use, there have been less than 50 substantial cases of DEET toxicity reported.

On the basis of type, the global body worn insect repellent market is divided into apparel, cream & oil, spray and others. The cream & oil segment is dominating the market with market share of XX% in 2020 due to easy availability, research & development and high adoption rate among consumers. Most consumers use cream & oil body-worn insect repellents when doing outdoor recreational activities such as camping, trekking, adventure sports, and climbing. In addition, people in defense and environmental research & studies also greatly use apparel-type body-worn insect repellent products to be safe from insect bites.

Geographical Penetration: North America is the largest market in body worn insect repellent market

North America is the largest market for body-worn insect repellent market, with nearly XX% of the global sales revenue in 2020, due to the presence of a number of leading market players, high awareness regarding insect body repellent and increasing research & development on plant-based repellents. Additionally, growing spending on body-worn repellent products in countries such as the USA and Canada is estimated to drive North American sales. The Asia Pacific is expected to have the highest growth rate in the forecast period, due to the high prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases in the region and is expected to drive the demand for body-worn insect repellent products. According to the World Health Organization, even if dengue infection exists in 129 countries globally, 70 percent of the actual burden of dengue is Asia-Pacific itself. Additionally, the increase in consumer awareness regarding the availability of various types of body-worn insect repellents in various countries such as India, China, and Australia is anticipated to drive regional growth. Other than that, rising demand for plant-based insect repellent creams and other products is expected to further boost the market growth.

Competitive Landscape: Growing product introduction is making the market more competitive

The global body worn insect repellent market is moderately fragmented with most of the manufacturers are focusing on research & development to make their products safe to use with high effectiveness, especially they research on finding alternative of chemicals such as DEET. The market competition is intense owing to increasing innovation in plant-based repellents and increasing trend of expanding their business in to online platforms. The leading market players of body worn insect repellent market are E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, ExOffcio LLC, Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc., The 3M company, Godrej Group, Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc, AgraCo Technologies International LLC, Larus Pharma Srl, Insect Shield LLC and others.

Recent Developments:

  • On January 25, 2021, Ranger Ready Repellents, a premium brand of insect repellents, announceed the launch of Ranger Ready Permethrin 0.5%™, and the Ranger Ready P2PAK, the first combination repellent pack that features body-worn Picaridin 20% and clothing-worn Permethrin 0.5%.

Additionally, the company is also focusing on promoting its products through its own distribution channel under the brand name SAWYER.

COVID-19 Impact: Pandemic had a positive impact on global body worn insect repellent market

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread among many people across various regions in 2021, increasing health concerns and fear of contracting various diseases among consumers have potentially increased the demand for body-worn insect repellents and is expected to increase the demand in 2021 also. Even if there is no evidence of the COVID-19 virus being transmitted through insects, as a safety measure and precautionary measure, consumers continue to purchase repellents to stay safe. The demand for mosquito repellent wristbands and apparel is on the rise mainly in developed countries of the world in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, a number of companies are influencing government departments to include body-worn insect repellents in the list of necessary products due to the rapid increase in the number of malaria and dengue cases.
