Nonwoven fabrics are broadly defined as sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally, or chemically. They are flat, porous sheets that are made directly from separate fibers or from molten plastic or plastic film. They are not made by weaving or knitting and do not require converting the fibers to yarn. Nonwovens may be a limited-life, single-use fabric or a very durable fabric. It provide specific functions such as absorbency, liquid repellency, resilience, stretch, softness, strength, flame retardancy, washability, cushioning, filtering, bacterial barriers and sterility. These properties are often combined to create fabrics suited for specific jobs while achieving a good balance between product use-life and cost. It can mimic the appearance, texture and strength of a woven fabric, and can be as bulky as the thickest paddings
The global non-woven fabric market size was worth US$ XX billion in 2019 and further predicted to reach US$ XX billion by 2027, at a CAGR of XX% during the forecast period (2020-2027).
The non-woven fabric market is mainly driven by rising demand of nonwoven fabric from automotive sector coupled with surging demand of nonwoven fabrics for various applications.
Increasing Demand of Nonwoven fabric from Automotive Sector
The demand for nonwoven fabrics from the automotive and transportation industries are expected to increase for manufacturing various parts such as anti-rattle pads, column padding, boats, car mats, battery separators, covering materials, console box linings, wheel-well acoustic reinforcements, panel trims, upholstery backings, headliners backing, window frames and various filters.
Nonwovens are used for primary backings, secondary backings and trunk liners as they offer superior properties such as flame retardancy, moldability, absorbency filtration, sterility acoustic insulation, liquid repellency and bacterial barrier. Nonwovens are also being widely used in the transportation sector to reinforce tires as they extend the life of the tire, provide strength and durability, and are lightweight and cost-effective, which acts as a driver for the nonwoven fabric market.
Increasing Demand of Nonwoven Fabrics For Various Applications
The demand for nonwoven fabrics is increasing from various end-use industries the geotextile, packaging, medical, hygiene, electronics, and construction industries for greenhouse shading, pavement overlays, artificial turf, sterile packaging, fuel cells, swabs, roadway reinforcements, cable wrap, drapes, battery separators, drainage, and erosion control applications.
The nonwoven fabric based geotextiles are flexible and textile-like polymer fabrics of controlled permeability due to which they are being widely used in the construction of roads and for land reclamation. Nonwoven fabric recyclable bags have become extremely popular with consumers as part of the earth-friendly movement as they are lightweight, sturdy and cut down on the number of plastic bags being used. The rising demand of nonwoven geotextiles from various industrial sectors for various application acts as a driver for the nonwoven fabric market during the forecast period.
COVID-19 Impact Analysis
The nonwoven fabrics market is expected to witness significant growth during to the covid-19. The nonwoven manufacturers across the globe are expanding their production capacity and investing in machinery to manufacture healthcare essentials. Therefore, the manufacturers are started investing to increase the production capabilities to meet the global market's updated demand. However, the increase in the number of cases worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing need for healthcare workers are expected to boost the demand for disposable hospital supplies and nonwoven materials during the forecast period.
Despite the pandemic, there is growth in the overall plastics, polymers and resins products, which is expected to drive the non-woven market size in the global market during the forecast period.
Based on the material, the non-woven fabric market has been classified into Polypropylene (PP), Polyester, Medical Grade, Civil Grade and by various regions.
PP segment accounted for the highest market share in the global market
The polypropylene materials segment holds the largest share in the nonwoven fabric market in 2019, owing to the rising demand of polypropylene nonwoven fabrics from various sectors as, non woven fabric lasts for almost 5 years and they decomposes naturally if placed outdoors. Also, when burning, it is non-toxic, odorless and leaves no residual substances, so non woven fiber does not pollute the environment.
By application, the the non-woven fabric market has been classified into hygiene, medical, filtration, automotive, consumer products, and others.
Hygiene segment is poised to grow at a healthy CAGR in the coming years
The hygiene segment is likely to dominate the market during the assessment period. This is mainly ascribed to proliferating hygiene sector in baby and female hygiene products. Nonwovens find usage as a substitue to traditional textiles in hygiene products owing to their softness, excellent absorption properties, strength, stretchability, smoothness, and cost-effectiveness.
The product is also used in agriculture and landscaping in root bags, capillary matting, turf protection, weed control fabrics and crops, which is anticipated to drive the nonwoven fibers market during the forecast period.
The raw materials used for production of nonwovens mostly include synthetic polymers and fibres. They represent more than 90 per cent of overall output. Currently, polypropylene (PP) is the major raw material used for global nonwovens.
PP, used as raw material in nonwovens manufacturing, is extremely versatile. It can be softened sufficiently to bond with other fibres, reducing the need for chemical binding. Use of PP was more than 60 per cent for nonwovens in 2015. The spunbonded PP nonwoven fabrics market size occupied close to half of the total demand in 2015. Considering superior characteristics, overall performance and competitive cost compared to other synthetic fibers, PP fibres dominate the nonwoven market.
Based on the technology, the non-woven fabric market has been classified spunbond, spunlaid, wet laid, dry laid and others.
Spunlaid continue to be the principal web forming process
Spunlaid nonwovens, which incorporate spunbond, meltblown and SMS nonwoven fabrics, were over half of the total market in 2016. They are anticipated to grow at the rate of 7.5 per cent through 2020, which is the highest among all web-forming processes. The massive use of spunlaid nonwovens is in the medical textiles fields, especially as spunlaid polypropylene nonwovens fabrics. The spunlaid nonwovens consumption is expected to reach 6.3 million tonnes by 2020. This will benefit from increased penetration of markets which are now served by competing nonwovens or other classes of materials.
Based on geography, the study analyzes the non-woven fabric market in the global market, including North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, and the Middle East & Africa.
Asia Pacific market to rise at the fastest CAGR during the review period
The APAC region accounted for the largest market share in 2019 and is likely to register the highest CAGR in the coming years. Factors such as improving global economy, expanding working population, rising domestic demand for hygiene products are expected to boost the market for nonwoven fabrics. The market for nonwoven fabrics in APAC is growing in the automobile, agriculture, geotextiles, industrial/military, medical/healthcare, and construction industries due to the unique functional properties offered by nonwoven fabrics, such as hygiene and safety, cost-effectiveness, durability, strength, lightweight, versatility, user-friendliness, environmental-friendliness, and logistical convenience. Asia-Pacific is expected to witness a significant increase in hygiene products, over the forecast period, due to the increasing adoption of female hygiene products in countries like India and China.
